Beryl var. Emerald on Calcite

A gorgeous small cab specimen featuring the very rare and desirable association of intense gemmy green emeralds on the black calcite, which enhances the green hue of the emeralds visually! The emeralds measure about 1.5 cm each and have not only top color (as with the above specimen) but a glassy lustre that is off the charts, literally the glaassiest surfaces I have seen on an emerald. They are solidly anchored in the calcite, and fully terminated. Pieces of this calibre are uncommon to say the least, and you often have to worry about fakes (though not in this case, as you can see how the calcites overgrew and anchor in the emeralds). Ed had very few gem crystals, and favored beryls - this was one of just 3 emeralds in the colletion, and was purchased by him in 1997. To this day, so far as i know, few black-calcite-matrix pieces have come out since then.

Size: miniature, 4.6 x 3.2 x 2.6 cm

Emerald on Calcite

A central 3.2 x 1.4 x 1.2 cm emerald crystal, translucent and gemmy, sits amidst a nest of stark white calcite. Importantly the calcite is crystallized - the best kind of matrix on these. The emerald has a very gemmy tip, and the rest of the crystal is quite translucent. It is a medium green in color, by gem dealer standards, but this is a color that I find very pleasing and fine for a specimen. As well, the contrast of white on green is dramatic. Long in the collection of Steven Sinotte and Rebecca Stewart, they bought this directly from one of the sources, and I agree with their feeling that this is a very special, balanced, display miniature. There are many emeralds to be had, and choosing one requires a compromise og gemminess, color, aesthetics, matrix, etc...this piece really has most qualities you would want, and for the price range I thought a very impressive specimen

Emerald on Calcite (twinned)

Thumbnail, 2.7 x 2 x 1 cm What more could you want in a thumbnail specimen? Emerald thumbers are rare enough on matrix, and with such a unique matrix at that I think this piece stands out from the crowd. The crystal has EXCELLENT color, brilliance, and a lot of gemminess to it, even gemmy zones that are cutters. The emerald has one partial crack near the base, though it does not seem to go through the crystal where it is anchored to the calcite and thus indicate a repair; otherwise it is undamaged and complete all around as you can see in the pictures.

A vug of well crystallized, gray calcite hosts this incredibly gem-clear, transparent, rich green emerald, measuring 1.75 cm in height. In recent years, the Coscuez Mine has produced many fine emerald specimens, like this one. However, to get such an aesthetic piece, without damage (and not a fake) is nearly impossible. This was an older specimen, obtained from a friend's collection. Ex. Alain Martaud Collection.

This glowing green emerald crystal is as thick as a finger and very dramatic. It measures 1.5 cm across and is just over 2.5 cm long complete, and then a bit longer with a slender tapering into the matrix. It has top, glassy lustre and a rich color that is very desirable in an emerald. The termination is wonderful, and has a few intricate bevels on the side by way of accent. The black calcite provides the best possible contrast and visual enhancement of the deep green hue, on emerald specimens, and this matrix is very rare. You would think that white works best as background but, in fact, the black calcite somehow visually enhances the green hue of the emerald.

This intense green emerald is 2.3 cm long, 1.5 cm wide, and glows with color. Not only is it on matrix, or calcite matrix, but it is on crystallized calcite matrix. The calcite crystal atop is about 1 inch across. It makes a great contrast in color and crystal form to the emerald. The emerald is typical in overall hexagonal habit, but atypical in that the surface is minutely detailed, as if somebody took a scribe tool and inlaid a complex cityscape on its surface. The result of this complexity on the apparently smooth outer faces is that the emerald is much more sparkly than you would expect, with all those microfacets reflecting light.

This beautiful matrix miniature hosts a 20 x 7 x 6 mm gem emerald crystal perched on contrasting white calcite, from the emerald mines of Colombia. This is not repaired, and not placed in the matrix, as you can clearly see the calcite grew around the crystal. At 2 cm, the crystal is good-sized. The color is intense and deep, vibrantly green. The association with crystallized calcite, instead of with rock or massive calcite matrix, though, really makes this specimen.

The crystal has great green color intensity and the faces are very lightly frosted. The upper 2 mm of the crystal is particularly gemmy. Highly representative of the species and locality.

Emerald on Calcite

This is a most unusual emerald specimen, featuring dark green crystals in narrow stairstep growth , one upon and reachng out from the next, extending elegantly out from a well trimmed matrix! I have never seen the like! This is not a major gem emerald perhaps, but is really a special piece because it so draws the eye with the combination of color and sculptural aesthetics. It is as impactful as an emerald miniature could be, aside from a gem crystal of much higher price point. NOTE : there is ONE CLEAN REPAIR to this specimen, in the middle of the cluster. It is hard to notice and I am sure that Ed himself never realized it.

A gemmy and lustrous, 1.5 cm, emerald crystal with excellent color saturation aesthetically attached to a calcite vein in shale matrix from the famous Cosquez Mine of Bolivia. A minor bit of contacting on the emerald is certainly not detracting from this beauty. 3.2 x 2.8 x 2.8 cm

This is a second gorgeous matrix specimen from this same recent and unique matrix find, featuring a 2 x 0.8 x 0.75 cm emerald crystal perched attractively against contrasting matrix. THE CRYSTAL IS ALMOST AN INCH LONG!! It is so transparently clean that you can look right through most of it, looking through it to the matrix beyond. It has a sharp, clean termination, smooth to the touch and pristine. Gem emeralds of this calibre, on matrix, usually sell for over five figures. This is one of two specimens from a new find, which were sold directly to me by a source in Colombia, and I got them cheaply and am passing it on. Note as an added bonus that the matrix of massive calcite on hard rock iscovered by sparkling, glistening, needle-like crystals of selenite. This seems to be characteristic of this new find, and it is a quite unusual and attractive accent to the usual calcite matrix from here! 8.2 x 3.9 x 4.8 cm

This is a gorgeous matrix specimen featuring a 2.5 x 1.2 x 1.2 cm emerald crystal perched on the side of an attractively balancing matrix. THE CRYSTAL IS AN INCH LONG!! It is so transparently clean that you can look right through it, for the upper two thirds at least. Even the bottom third is still fairly gemmy and translucent, looking in through it to the matrix beyond. It has a sharp, clean termination, smooth to the touch although with some minute ingrown matrix particles within the surface. Gem emeralds of this calibre, on matrix. A very fine and highly unusual matrix emerald thumbnail from the Muzo Mine and the Carl Davis Collection. Two gemmy and lustrous, beautifully color saturated emerald crystals with distinctively different terminations are aesthetically set in calcite matrix. One termination is pyramidal and the other is the normal pinacoidal termination. Pyramidal terminations on Colombian emeralds are rare. Having two styles on the same piece, is, I think it safe to say, unprecedented and unexpected. Ex. Carlton Davis Collection.

The gemmy and lustrous crystal is richly saturated, a deep emerald-green and is so transparently clean that you can look right through it. Note as an added bonus, that there is a tiny pyritohedron set on the side of the emerald and also a 3 mm emerald on the matrix. Ex. Saller Collection of Germany.

The Emerald measures 3.0 x 1.2 cm. The crystal is perfectly centered against a matrix of white Calcite. It is highly gemmy for an Emerald of this size, and not at all cloudy or murky, like so many tend to be. The color is almost electric as it is not a dark green, but a very vibrant green and extremely lively. The crystal itself is perfectly terminated with sharp, lustrous faces on the prism. Ex. Just a huge, fat, glowing green emerald! It is rather crude in the back due to some contact and damage on the back faces, but is fully terminated and displays impressively. It has very good, even color, quite dark actually, and is transparent or highly translucent through about 75% of the crystal. Given the thickness, this is exceptional! In sum, it LOOKS like a very expensive piece, but is not.

Without question the worldпїЅs finest emeralds are from Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor in Colombia. This emerald specimen features a richly saturated, deep emerald green, lustrous and gemmy, emerald crystal which measures 2.0 cm in length. If this crystal had been any gemmier, it would have been relegated to cutting material. Thankfully, it is gemmy enough that we like it as a specimen but it survived the cutters! It is funny that if i were to buy a contemporary example of this material, i'd have to pay more than what i am charging for this antique one which came ot me as part of an old collection?!

The emeralds from Jos can get very large but like this one are usually under-saturated in color. That said, they are infinitely gemmier than their Colombian cousins and exhibit a deeper blue-green color. In addition, they are more interesting from a crystallographic viewpoint, with lovely bi-pyramidal terminations. This particular emerald weighs 9.12 carats and displays a slight color change near the top end of the crystal. BETTER AND MORE GEMMY IN PERSON!

With such good color, gemminess, and form, this would be a great emerald specimen from anywhere modern; but to have such from an old classic locality in the Urals makes this a true killer. It is also a 3-dimensional and well balanced thumbnail of exceptional showiness and color. It is the gemmiest such crystal I have seen for the locality. It is glassy as all get-out and is complete all around. Pics just do not do it justice! 2.2 x 2 x 1.6 cm

If I did not know the source 100% on this, I would have sworn this to be a Colombian or perhaps Afghani specimen of emerald. But i KNOW this came from Brazil and the trail is well documented, and I have to say i am genuinely surprised. This is a vibrant green, lustrous crystal of a rich green color - quite uncommon from Brazil. In person, it has more apparent lustre. The termination is unusual in that it is prismatic (if shallowly so) instead of flat as usual for an emerald. (obviously not a Jonas tourmaline but it fit in well with this update and was also at Munich...)

Emerald (12-SIDED)

A simply stunning, fat thumbnail-sized crystal of emerald with very good COLOR , LUSTRE , and GEMMINESS...in person, much better than you can relate from the pics. The termination is glassy. The upper half is quite gemmy and mostly transparent, whereas it grades to opacity towards the base. This has some intrinsic facet rough value in the top portion although it is admittedly included in parts by internal veiling; but this is ironically of benefit to the specimen collector because its still very appealing as a specimen crystal and yet it survived the cutter because of slight flaws that do not matter as much in a specimen as in the cut stone. Also, if it were of the highest cutting grade, it would be unaffordable to the specimen collector - so one looks for the compromise between top quality and visual appeal in buying an emerald crystal, always aiming to have SOME intrinsic cutting value. Note that the piece is MUCH more gemmy in person because the camera cannot focus well on the crystal without going through to the back faces. You can actually see if you look closely how the faces you se ein the leftmost pic

A simply stunning, fat thumbnail-sized crystal of emerald with very good COLOR , LUSTRE , and GEMMINESS...in person, much better than you can relate from the pics. The termination is awesome - large, equant, and super-glassy. You can look right down through the crystal to read what is below it, with total clarity! This has some intrinsic facet rough value although it is admittedly a shade lighter than the more expensive emerald hues and has some internal veiling; but this is ironically of benefit to the specimen collector because its still very appealing as a specimen crystal and yet it survived the cutter because of slight flaws that do not matter as much in a specimen as in the cut stone. Also, if it were of the highest cutting grade, it would be unaffordable to the specimen collector - so one looks for the compromise between top quality and visual appeal in buying an emerald crystal, always aiming to have SOME intrinsic cutting value at the same time as trading it off for a few little internal veils that prohibit you from having to pay the stupid rough pricing on these guys. It is so clear and transparent that the piece is MUCH more gemmy in person because the camera cannot focus well on the crystal without going through to the back faces.

This is a totally transparent, 16.1 carat, nearly flawless, light emerald green crystal with a smaller sidecar perched near the termination. The large crystal measures 2.3 cm in length. This is typical of the Jos area emeralds, in that they are gemmier but more blue-green in color than their cousins around the world. Specimens are rare and highly desirable, and much less common than Colombian emeralds on the market from which these are readily distinguishable by the strange color range. Jos emeralds tend to occur only as single crystals - I have never seen them on matrix and only rarely in clusters, of which this is an extremely aesthetic specimen for the associaiton of the two crystals, giving it a pizzazz beyond wha tyou normally can expect.

This type of emerald is characterized by thin septae of carboniferous shale separating the crystal into a flower like appearance. Trapiche Emeralds are quite rare, and highly valued especially for their value in jewelry. They are typically made into cabochons, rather than faceted stones. This one has excellent color, bright and showy, wehreas many are dull. It has gemmy areas within the pattern. At 27 carats in weight, this has considerable gem value, therefore, if you were to make a few cabs out of it.

Locality: Rist Mine (North America Emerald Mines), Hiddenite, Alexander County, North Carolina, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 2.8 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm.
A gemmy and lustrous, rarely available, doubly terminated emerald crystal from the Rist Mine of North Carolina. The upper portion of the crystal is much gemmier than the lower portion. Both terminations are lightly frosted. The crystal contains embedded clove-brown rutile needles and blades and muscovite plates. A classic and excellent older North Carolina emerald. Weighs 8 grams.

Locality: Serra das Г‰guas, Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 10.5 x 6 x 3 cm.
This specimen is a floater, COMPLETE and terminated all around with all three of the quartzes even doubly-terminated. The bottom termination on the emerald is rough, but it’s a termination. The piece must have grown rapidly in pocket and then fallen from the matrix, while solution of emerald was still flowing through to cap off and continue growth on the once-broken termination at bottom. The top faces are sharp and lustrous, ingrown with the diagonally-attached quartzes (again, all doubly-terminated!). There are two characteristic Brumado-style magnesite crystals perched off the bottom-right hand face of the emerald. Also, there are a few 5mm, green, disc-shaped uvite crystals present (on the left , attached to the emerald; and another included inside the left tip of the upwards-pointing quartz crystal). It is not gemmy, but it is definitely green - and 4 inches tall. A very surprising, unique style for a Brumado beryl, striking because it is just so different from the norm. Weight is 123 grams.
Beryl (Var.: Emerald), Quartz (Var.: Smoky Quartz)

Locality: Hiddenite, Alexander County, North Carolina, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
Rarely will you get the chance to acquire a fine Hiddenite emerald, and this beauty has all the attributes to make it special even amongst others that have come out. MATRIX SPECIMENS ARE ALMOST UNHEARD OF, and I have NEVER seen even a single crystal of this apatite-like form and neon color. It is surely an older specimen! The two intergrown, tabular emeralds have superb luster, an excellent mint-green color, good clarity, and even some unusual and attractive zoning along the c axis. The contrast as it is perched upon the termination of a smoky quartz is both aesthetic and , to my knowledge, incredibly rare on emerald specimens from this locality or any other. Both crystals are contacted on the back, but this does not affect the display face and pales compared to the importance of this specimen both as a locality piece and as a competition-quality miniature of such unique aspect. The aesthetics and rarity combine to make this a

Locality: Dayakou, Nanwenhe complex, Malipo County, Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 6.5 x 4.0 x 3.5 cm.
A 3.8 cm, euhedral, pleasing green emerald crystal is aesthetically set in massive quartz matrix in this fine specimen from recent finds in China. While these crystals certainly are not as gemmy as good Colombian ones, they are lustrous and translucent. The emerald is doubly terminated and is pristine. Very highly representative of the species from this locality.

Locality: Kagem Emerald Mine, Kafubu Emerald District, Ndola, Copperbelt Province, Zambia (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 3.0 x 2.7 x 2.6 cm.
In some ways, this was my favorite of the emeralds available from the first specimen production out of this world-famous gem mine, for its overall quality and aesthetics. The knoll of quartz matrix features a sharp and very equant, 2.6-cm-long emerald perched atop its natural pedestal. Remarkably, it was excavated without it falling out and needing repairs. It is nestled, still, securely in the quartz which once enclosed (and protected) the crystal. The top termination is very fine and sharp. The lower termination is not lustrous, but is nevertheless complete. It has a consistent, rich, evergreen color, darker than most Colombian emeralds and so distinct. It has better lustre and sharper form, than most Kagem pieces I have now seen.

Locality: Kagem Emerald Mine, Kafubu Emerald District, Ndola, Copperbelt Province, Zambia (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 4.6 x 3.0 x 3.0 cm.
This specimen features a 4.6 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm emerald of deep evergreen color, on quartz. As with most emeralds from this mine, the surface is a little rough and pitted compared to Colombian emeralds. This piece was chosen for its very fine exposure, showing the whole crystal and a freestanding termination. The termination is slightly asymmetric, but is complete. The color is very dark, but still the piece is quite translucent and even transparent in zones.

A striking, complete-all-around specimen of surreal, gemmy and lustrous, parallel-growth, green-blue emerald crystals with glassy, colorless magnesite rhombs from a new find at Brumado, Brazil. The emeralds reach 3.0 cm on this beauty and are lined up like a series of green smokestacks covered with sparkly jewels. The color is not deep green but the association is really unusual. The major emeralds are pristine and a few scattered, darker green uvite crystals are a very nice accent.

Size: 8.3 x 6.5 x 4.8 cm.
A fine and aesthetic specimen from recent finds at Brumado, Brazil. A 3.6 cm, glassy, sea-green emerald crystal is attached to the side of two, diverging quartz crystals that are preferentially studded with gemmy magnesite rhombs. A beautiful spray of gently curved, 2.7-cm-tall emerald curvving up the face of these large, sharp calcites! The piece is very unusual, in its aesthetics, and makes for a very balanced miniature wiht incredibly bright color to it. the sharp form of the calcite contrasts starkly with the classic hexagonal beryl crystals in the middle . Locality: Coscuez Mine (Cosquez Mine), Muzo, Vasquez-YacopГ Mining District, BoyacГЎ Department, Colombia (Locality at mindat.org)
This gorgeous specimen has two beautiful deep-green emerald crystals perched among jewel-like, multifaceted calcites that really accent the emeralds and contrast with the green. The major emerald atop is 1.5 cm long and is exceptionally gemmy. In fact, it contains gem rough equal to several thousand dollars in cutting value. It literally glows with bright color and internal brilliance. The secondary crystal is equally good interms of gem rough value and quality, though it has a minor ding on the upper edge of its termination that detracts a little bit, as a specimen. I was tempted to remove this crystal entirely as it has also some gem value (especially as it seems to extend inwards under the calcite!). However, I decided to leave it in, as the extra color splash really does add panache to the specimen and the small ding isn't visible from afar anyhow. Nevertheless, it could be clipped and sold as facet rough down the road. 4.4 x 4 x 3 cm

Size: 4.1 x 3.4 x 2.9 cm.

Locality: Panjsher (Panjshir) Valley, Hessa-e-Say District, Panjshir (Panjsheer) Province, Afghanistan (Locality at mindat.org)
Three GEMMY, bright green emerald crystals in matrix, from a locality in Afghanistan that has turned out FAR fewer emeralds than the famous Columbian ones - these are much more rare on the specimen market as most are sold quickly for gem and cabbing rough. This valley was disputed heavily during the afghan civil wars because of its importance in generating funds from the mining. now, it has been producing specimens a little more regularly. The largest crystal here measures 2.5 cm in length and is TERMINATED. These crystals have wonderful color! 6.1 x 4.7 x 3.7cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Carnaiba Mine, Pindobaçu, Campo Formoso District, Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
While these crystals certainly are not gemmy as for good Columbian ones, note that this is an old BRAZILIAN emerald specimen - far more rare! The accompanying index card shows that it was purchased 30 years ago from Pala Properties, and that it had come out of the Robert Rich collection. The best crystal in this cluster measures 2.5 cm, with well-defined faces and termination. Gorgeous and unusually freestanding cluster, ex Ruggiero collection! 3.9 x 3.3 x 1.3cm

Locality: Jos Plateau, Plateau State, Nigeria (Locality at mindat.org)
The emeralds from Jos can get very large but like this one are usually under-saturated in color. That said, they are infinitely gemmier than their Colombian cousins and exhibit a deeper blue-green color. In addition, they are more interesting from a crystallographic viewpoint, with lovely bi-pyramidal terminations. This particular emerald weighs 9.12 carats and displays a slight color change near the top end of the crystal. BETTER AND MORE GEMMY IN PERSON! 2.6 x 0.6 x 0.4 cm

A Russian emerald crystal, nicely centered and well-exposed on a schist matrix. Relatively large! 3.7 x 3.0 x 2.1cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Jos Plateau, Plateau State, Nigeria (Locality at mindat.org)
2.3 x 1.5 x 0.8 cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Panjsher (Panjshir) Valley, Hessa-e-Say District, Panjshir (Panjsheer) Province, Afghanistan (Locality at mindat.org)
Without a doubt, this is the best Afghan specimen emerald for quality, regardless of size, I have ever seen. White marble acts as the matrix for a very gemmy, deep, emerald green, lustrous, crystal that measures 1.25 cm in length. One seldom sees specimens for sale and Afghan emeralds are uncommon in collections. Mostly, they are sold over there for cutting and carving, and seldom reach our side of the world. 2.1 x 1.7 x 1.1 cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Muzo, Vasquez-YacopГ Mining District, BoyacГЎ Department, Colombia (Locality at mindat.org)
In person, this GEM crystal of emerald is actually less blue and more the typical spectral green of a good Columbian emerald. It is terminated fully, and VERY gemmy with superb color in the top half. This crystal weighs 3.5 carats and is all gem. 1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Emerald deposit, Leckbachgraben (Leckbachrinne), Nasenkopf Mt., Habach Valley, Hohe Tauern Mts, Salzburg, Austria (Locality at mindat.org)
No, these emeralds cannot compete with Columbian ones, but they are from the classic European locality in Austria! The crystal, still embedded in the schist matrix, measure to over 2 cm. This specimen came out of the Richard Hauck collection. 6.7 x 5.3 x 1.0cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Chivor Mine, Chivor, GuaviГі-GuatГ©que Mining District, BoyacГЎ Department, Colombia (Locality at mindat.org)
A fairly gemmy and included, 2.0 cm emerald crystal with good color, with pyrite on albite matrix from the famous Chivor Mine of Colombia. There is also an adjacent acessory emerald crystal . Ex Ruggiero Collection and formerly in the famous Carl Bosch and Smithsonian Collections. Carl Bosch was a very prominent European collector who lived from 1874-1940. The Smithsonian purchased his collection in 1965, which numbered 25,000 mineral specimens! The HANDWRITTEN BOSCH label and the Smithsonian label number indicates an old piece. It is rare to get his original labels, as you might imagine. Aside from that, the emerald is pretty good so you are not just buying pedeigree. 3.9 x 2.0 x 1.7 cm
Beryl (Var.: Emerald)

Locality: Coscuez Mine (Cosquez Mine), Muzo, Vasquez-YacopГ Mining District, BoyacГЎ Department, Colombia (Locality at mindat.org)
