Calcite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: IraГ, Alto Uruguai region, Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 21.9 x 17.4 x 9.4 cm.
Amidst a field of lustrous, bright purple amethyst crystals, a large, lone scalenohedron of silky calcite rises, to a height of 7 cm. The calcite is translucent, actually transparent in the center but with ornate stepped modifications on the faces that give it a silky appearance. A large, pretty and quite dramatic specimen.
Calcite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: IraГ, Alto Uruguai region, Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 10.9 x 6.6 x 6.5 cm.
A frosty, creamy calcite crystal measuring 5.5 x 4 cm, sits on a bed of gemmy amethyst crystals - a really pretty setting! Smaller crystals surround it. Irai continues to produce batches of beautiful specimens of calcite and amethyst of different forms from time to time, sometimes in combination such as you have here.
Calcite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: IraГ, Alto Uruguai region, Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 20.9 x 13.0 x 8.9 cm.
This BIG specimen is amazing not just for the beauty of the combination of species, but for the calcites themselves. They grew in two completely different forms, on the same specimen: scalenohedrons, and flat nail-head crystals. Some of the crystals are part one and part the other - just incredible from a crystallographic standpoint! The crystal grew part-way up then rose to a pointed termination in one area, with the rest of the crystal continuing up to a flat top that wrapped itself around the point of the scalenohedron!!

Size: 13.1 x 8.3 x 4.8 cm.
A calcite crystal, complete and undamaged, of bizarre form, on a bed of lustrous purple amethyst. The calcite is a compound crystal of cubic forms, with a pleasing, translucent honey color. It is really stark and striking sitting there against the amethyst backdrop! A large and showy specimen!
Calcite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 28.5 x 23.4 x 9.1 cm.
This spectacular showpiece was probably trimmed from the inside of a giant geode, and considered more valuable as a large cabinet specimen than as a huge geode. It features an 11-inch band of fabulous calcite crystals, to 4.5 cm in height, bursting in all directions and running right through the middle of this large plate of very gemmy, razor-sharp and glass-lustered amethyst crystals.
Calcite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 13.7 x 13.2 x 7.9 cm.
This is a large and gorgeous specimen from Brazil. There is a complete, multiply-terminated, silky calcite crystal sitting right on a cluster of gemmy, glassy amethyst crystals. The calcite measures over 10 cm, and the specimen was trimmed out very carefully around it, so you have this wonderful balance between the calcite and the amethyst. The calcite has this wonderful creamy, silky luster, and is translucent, a light golden color which does not come through in the pics; it contrasts nicely with the glassy amethyst. This was very likely an amethyst geode, and the geode was cut and trimmed out to create this dazzling specimen that highlights the calcite.
Calcite, Fluorite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: Mahodari, Nasik District, Maharashtra, India (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 8.7 x 4.8 x 2.2 cm.
A strange specimen of calcite-coated fluorite perched on amethyst. This is a rare association, and the stark contrast is beautiful and unusual. Ex. Charlie Key.

apophyllite with amethyst - Pandulena Hill, Nasik District, Maharashtra, India - (16x10cm)
Apophyllite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: Hunan Province, China (Locality at mindat.org)
A superb Chinese combination piece from a unique find of apophyllite on amethystine quartz, that to this day remains unrivalled though this came out 5 years ago. This piece was exhibited at the Tucson 2000 show as a new find. It has since been in a private collection, since I bought it out of Irv Brown's display case at that show. It has a sparkle and life to it that makes these among the glassiest quartzes around, and the gem-clear apophyllites atop enhance the pale amethystine color. 10 x 5.5 x 5 cm

Size: 17.0 x 12.2 x 8.8 cm.
This is a fine, dramatic and probably old large cabinet specimen of calcite on amethyst from the ancient workings of quartz in Idar-Oberstein, used for centuries for carving and lapidary art. Still today, the world center of the highest end of the lapidary crafts is based in Idar-Oberstein, though stone to work on is now imported from elsewhere. This is a striking and beautiful pocket in basalt of lightly hematite-tinted amethyst crystals hosting a dense cluster of glassy, colorless calcite crystals to 2.5 cm. Ex. Irai was known for these unique calcites, and then the supply seemed to dry up. There were hardly any available at the last years Tucson show, and they were overpriced, so we bought none. Then, to our surprise, we found a cache of new specimens with one dealer at the small Spring Denver Show last year, and cherry-picked all the best ones, and sold them. Then they disappeared again - until finally, a contact brought us the only specimens we saw at this years Tucson Show, and we bought the entire lot - the good, the bad and the ugly - in order to get the good ones. This is a relatively large specimen with one big crystal lying flat on its side and others sticking up off the matrix. The matrix is very unusual in that it has purple tones from amethyst mixed with the usual copper-mineral green, adding to the attractiveness of this one. 12.6 x 12.2 x 6.6cm
Calcite, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst), Pyrite

Locality: Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
A unique specimen, like none I have seen before from this region. It features a superb, gemmy, transparent, twinned calcite measuring 3 cm across, perched with smaller calcites cascading down the termination of a deep purple amehtyst point. It is amazing such a thing survived being found and cut out of the enclosing amethyst cathedral in which it surely grew. The lustre, and contrasting colors, the complex form of the calcite...all combine to make this a really stunning and unique piece. 9.6 x 4.8 x 5.5 cm

Epidote, Quartz (Var.: Amethyst)

Locality: Jinkouhe, Ebian County, Leshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 8.4 x 7.4 x 2.7 cm.
This find a little over a year ago (finished now) really stirred things up for awhile. Amethyst is not common from China, so miners were delighted to find these plates of lustrous, beautiful crystals with crystals of deep moss-green EPIDOTE sprinkled over them! This one has a beautiful balance of the little green epidotes with the purple amethyst as backdrop.

Locality: Hongquizhen Quarry, Meigu County, Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 10.5 x 5.3 x 3.2 cm.
From the finds around two years ago - mossy-green crystals of epidote on crystals of amethyst. The specimens from this find took various forms. There were larger crystals of epidote on some; others had plain or hematite-included quartz rather than amethyst, etc. But I like how the epidotes on this specimen have almost the look of drusy pyromorphite from France or the Wheatley Mine, and their contrast with the purple amethyst.

A superb and very aesthetic epidote on amethyst specimen from the Chinese find of a few years ago. Highly lustrous wreathes and drapes of olive-green epidote blades are beautifully scattered on the cluster of glassy, translucent, amethyst crystals. The one epidote cluster atop the amethyst crystal looks like a green plume on a helmet. The amethyst crystals are included with sparkly hematite microcrystals. An exceptional combination specimen from the Ed David Collection.

Amethyst & Quartz Crystals Close-up. Rock & mineral shop, unknown source.
Amethyst is best known as a purple gemstone, but it's actually a purple variety of quartz. This type of quartz can occur in shades of light lilac, lavender, mauve, and deep purple. On the Mohs scale, which tests the hardness of minerals, amethyst has a Mohs scale of 7, which means it not as scratch resistant as topaz, and even less so than diamond. The two largest sources of amethysts are Brazil and Zambia.
