Aesthetically crowning the top of a massive sapphire matrix are several lustrous and translucent, rose red to cherry red crystals of ruby. A larger, VERY sharp ruby crystal to 1.25 cm in length dominates the middle. Impressive overall for the richness and the color, with a prominently displayed dominant crystal as well! The sharp habit and intense color of these crystals is unlike ruby from other localities, and immediately recognizable as something

This is a killer thumbnail specimen, my favorite matrix thumbnail from the lot that I had. A bit of matrix is host for 2 crystals of lustrous and translucent, cherry red ruby with exquisite micro-details on the faces and sharp bevelled edges. The larger one, exhibiting superb crystal form, measures 1.5 cm across. These ruby crystals are totally unique in form, and combined with color and gemminess make for a dramatic matrix presentation that is unlike rubies from any other locality in the world, so far as I know.Because of the balance and aesthetics of this specimen, and the quality of the ruby crystals (which have some cutting value as well), I regard this specimen very highly. Thumbnail or not, its superb. Bu as a thumbnail, for overall balance and poise, I think it is the highest competition-level quality.

This is a rather equant, glassy and gemmy, rose to cherry red, doubly terminated, ruby crystal. The color is very close to the pigeonпїЅs blood red, found in rubies. Only contacted at the bottom. This is a SUPERB loose ruby crystal of really quite good lustre and form compared to rubies from any other locality. For this particular deposit, it is more pure red, and more gemmy, than most crystals of this size. It should have a considerable gem rough value within. 25 carats. photos do NOT do this crystal justice!

Size: miniature, 3.4 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm

Ruby

At approximately 1 inch in height, this is a fairly good-sized ruby crystal by any standard. For Vietnam, where most rubies are resorbed and somehow lumpy it seems, it is of exceptional sharpness. The termination is complete all around, and the crystal is freestanding from the matrix completely and fully exposed on all sides for half its height. The termination is slightly stepped, but sharp and complete, and also lustrous. The surface is waxy in lustre, as with Mogok rubies and unlike Afghanistan ruby specimens. The color is a slightly pink-red hue, that really is very different from the classic hues found historically in Burma (Mogok). Hence, to my eye, it is quite different than a similar crystal from Mogok - which would also cost a lot more money due to the more developed lapidary and wholesale markets there (and in particular, demand from teh Chinese buyers for Burmese ruby for carving material). Thus, in a similarly formed Vietnam ruby, we get really all the benefits we would want in a specimen without competing with the carving market to buy them, at least for now.

It is on massive, gemmy scapolite matrix...the ruby so transparent that the underlying scapolite is easily discernible. This is a fascinating corundum specimen. Ex. William Larson Collection.

Locality: Jegdalek (Jagdalek; Jagdalak; Jagdalik) Ruby Mine, Sorobi District, Kabol (Kabul) Province, Afghanistan (Locality at mindat.org)
A stunning ruby specimen with sharp form showing none of the usual rounded nature we often see on Afghani rubies. It almost certainly grew freestanding into a pocket, whereas most others have to be excavated out of enclosing matrix of quartz or calcite. The crystals are translucent, though not bright and gemmy per se. The color is a very deep, classic ruby-red in hue. VERY SHARP specimen formerly in the thumbnail collection of Roland and Cathy Sherman. 2.5 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm

This specimen has multiple crystals with the juiciest, waxy red lustre and color you could ask for in a ruby. They GLOW with color. Each cluster is about an inch across. The striations on the crystal faces increase the reflection of light, too, as an added bonus. I have seen many rubies from here trickle out the last 5 years, but few with such overall impact as this. Gem Ruby with Sapphire core

In 1984 Charlie , along with John Barlow , sponsored a collecting trip to Nepal for these. I have his note on the back of an old business card that states, in his opinion, this was the best crystal found. Note the winding core in the middle which is a sapphire core, something rarely seen and in need of some study to figure out why this is going on! There is probably some neat gem rough to be cut from this, with the ruby rind around a purple sapphire core. The specimen is completely WEIRD, in that it tapers from a narrow base to a wider termination which shows multiple trigonal faces. The termination has some damage on the back edge, but not in front. Note there IS one repair about the middle, so its not perfect by any means; but it IS a beautiful and very intense gem crystal that leaps out from a showcase, and the flaws are noted in that context. It is repaired at the midpoint but, you do not really mind so much in person, when the gemminess and intense color impact is taken into account (and otherwise this would be a 10k thumbnail anyhow). The color is not intense, it is almost metallic in

Although it is only weakly translucent (unless strongly backlit), this is a fine example of a doubly terminated ruby crystal on matrix and particularly good for the locality. Ruby on Marble

An impressive ruby specimen from the classic ruby mines here which date back even to Roman times. Large crystals in matrix are rare. Large GOOD crystals in matrix are almost unheard of. This is a rare example of such a piece, with a dominating 3 x 3 x 1.2-cm crystal sticking straight up and completely exposed on either side (a risky bit of prep work, that was!). The crystal is pristine and complete. As you can see it is also highly translucent and glows when backlit. This specimen was formerly in the Joe Freilich collection built by Dave Wilber, which was on short notice auctioned at Sotheby's in 2001. It was in Wally Mann's collection here in Dallas by 2003, where it has remained til now. Comes with custom base though I have to say it displays equally well from EITHER side.

The ruby is 3.0 cm tall. When backlit, it absolutely GLOWS in a case! Rarely do you get such large examples of rubies from Afghanistan and usually they are broken , when you do. A crystal of such size is EXCEEDINGLY rare....and so nicely perched, almost beyond expectation! This lovely corundum var. ruby, perched on white calcite, is lustrous, translucent, with wonderful ”pigeons blood” red color saturation. This has recently proven to be one of the world’s greatest localities for fine specimen rubies. This must have been one of the earliest specimens to trickle out, and was surely prized as such a rar epiece! This ruby crystal is doubly-terminated, with sharp trigons at each end. Such large, equant rubies are rare. Usually they pinch off, break, or just do not form on one end. A large doubly-terminated crystal like this should be considered unusual and valued highly. The pigeon-blood red color is excellent and this is classic for Mogok material - now quite hard to come by because of both the embargo on this nations government and because easy mining has stripped away much of the deposit and it is harder now to find things such as this. Ex. Graw Collection.

Locality: Winza, Mpapwa, Mpapwa (Mpwampwa) District, Dodoma region, Tanzania (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 1.6 x 1.1 x 1.1 cm.
Unusual for this locality, here we have a stereotypical ruby crystal of classic hexagonal form and pink-red color. It looks more Russian or Vietnamese in form, but it’s from the same place as the odd bi-colors and pure intense rubies we have seen come from Winza lately. Nicely doubly terminated, this prismatic crystal of lustrous and translucent ruby weighing 29 carats.

Perched aesthetically on matrix is a lustrous and gemmy, color-zoned sapphire and ruby crystal measuring 1.5 cm in length. It is completely freestanding with a fully exposed termination. The crystal is complete all around. It is gemmy, transparent even with minimal backlighting. As with other specimens from this find, the color varies from more red to more purple depending on light spectrum but this leans mostly to Ruby. A superb matrix ruby specimen.

Locality: Winza, Mpapwa, Mpapwa (Mpwampwa) District, Dodoma region, Tanzania (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 1.3 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm.
This is a rather equant, glassy and gemmy, rose to cherry red, doubly terminated, ruby crystal. The color is very close to the pigeon’s blood red, found in rubies. Only contacted at the bottom. This is a superb loose ruby crystal of really quite good lustre and form compared to rubies from any other locality. For this particular deposit, it is more pure red, and more gemmy, than most crystals of this size. 25 carats.

This is a major matrix piece for the discovery, to date. Aesthetically perched high on its matrix is a doubly terminated, lustrous and translucent, cherry red crystal of ruby, measuring 2.2 cm in length. Very nice form and sharpness make it stand out dramatically. This crystal is unlike most others from here, very well formed. Compared to other locales, these rubies are sharper with better defined faces, than you normally see in a natural crystal.

Locality: Winza, Mpapwa, Mpapwa (Mpwampwa) District, Dodoma region, Tanzania (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 6.4 x 5.9 x 4.0 cm.
A large piece: the matrix is composed primarily of massive corundum, and host to a few lustrous and translucent crystals, of lavender to rose-red ruby/sapphire. The large crystal is doubly terminated and measures 3.0 cm across. There is a negative impression on the back of the main crystal where another ruby was once in contact but the display face presents nicely.

Locality: Winza, Mpapwa, Mpapwa (Mpwampwa) District, Dodoma region, Tanzania (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 6.1 x 4.8 x 4.5 cm.
Nestled in a vug of massive corundum is a lustrous and translucent, lavender to rose red colored ruby crystal, measuring 2.2 cm in length. This is a large, well-defined crystal of unusual size for this locality. There is a slight internal gradation to sapphire, visible when backlit. In normal lighting, it is a much more typical ruby color, at least on the surface zones. The presentation of the crystal in matrix is more typical of other matrix gem crystals compared to the generally smaller examples we are otherwise seeing from this deposit.

Locality: Winza, Mpapwa, Mpapwa (Mpwampwa) District, Dodoma region, Tanzania (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 1.8 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm.
This is a new ruby mine, and has been producing amazing bi-colored red/purple rough for the gem trade recently but few crystals have been preserved. This matrix hosts a sharp, gemmy, intensely colored crystal of nearly 1 cm. It is obviously twinned. In shifting lights, these change color and can show a bit of purple/blue color, even.

Locality: Jegdalek (Jagdalek; Jagdalak; Jagdalik) Ruby Mine, Sorobi District, Kabol (Kabul) Province, Afghanistan (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 7.6 x 6.7 x 4.0 cm.
An impressive ruby specimen from the classic ruby mines here which date back even to Roman times. Large crystals in matrix are rare. Large good crystals in matrix are almost unheard of. This is a rare example of such a piece, with a dominating 3 x 3 x 1.2-cm crystal sticking straight up and completely exposed on either side. The crystal is pristine and complete. Ex. Joe Freilich and Wall Mann Collections.

Locality: Ganesh Himal deposit, Somdang, Rasuwa District, Bagmati Zone, Nepal (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 3.9 x 2.4 x 2.2 cm.
Most large ruby corundum crystals seen these days come from Mysore in India, and they tend to be lot clunkier than these elegant and much rarer crystals from Nepal. The two long crystals (2.5 cm) are both terminated, and are a fine bright translucent pink. Ex. Elling Collection.

Locality: Luc Yen, Yenbai (Yen Bai) Province, Vietnam (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 3.4 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm.
At approximately 1 inch in height, this is a fairly good-sized ruby crystal by any standard. For Vietnam, where most rubies are reabsorbed and somehow lumpy it seems, it is of exceptional sharpness. The termination is complete all around, and the crystal is freestanding from the matrix completely and fully exposed on all sides for half its height. The termination is slightly stepped, but sharp and complete, and also lustrous. The surface is waxy in lustre. The color is a slightly pink-red hue.

Locality: Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 7.5 x 6.5 x 5.3 cm.
This specimen features a good sized, somewhat lustrous, light purplish-red color Ruby crystal on white Calcite matrix. The color is decent for a Ruby from this locality, and it certainly has a distinct purplish hue. The crystal measures 2.5 cm long.
Corundum (Var.: Ruby)

Locality: Mysore District, Karnataka, India (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 5.4 x 3.5 x 2.6 cm.
This is a very large compound crystal of deep pink, translucent ruby-corundum. There are distinct faces all the way around the specimen. You can see a number of intergrown hexagonal subcrystals of various sizes, to about 2.5 cm across. Weighs 80 grams. Very old specimen probably from the early 1900s, ex George Elling Collection.

Locality: Ampanihy District, Southwestern Region, TulГ©ar (Toliara) Province, Madagascar (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 4.2 x 3.1 x 0.3 cm.
Though this thin specimen looks like a slice from a larger ruby crystal, it is not: it is a very unusual, extremely flattened example of the ruby-corundum well-known from this locality - a complete and terminated crystal. The crystal has a deep maroon color, and an epitaxial plateau on one side. An old specimen, ex. Carlton Davis.

Locality: Jegdalek (Jagdalek; Jagdalak; Jagdalik) Ruby Mine, Sorobi District, Kabol (Kabul) Province, Afghanistan (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 6.8 x 5.0 x 3.1 cm.
The Rubies from Jagdalak are among some of the most well known and superbly crystallized Ruby specimens around. This specimen features a remarkably sharp, very well formed, semi-lustrous, purplish-pink color crystal group on a marble matrix. The crystal group measures 1.8 cm long. The crystals are not at all opaque as the majority of these specimens tend to be. The crystals also have good form with distinct basal pinacoids.

A superb crystallized, waxy-lustrous Ruby of the likes you rarely see. The single crystal measures an incredible 2.2 x 1.7 x 2.2 cm, has superb luster, and deep red color and translucence that are excellent. The chevron pattern on the sharp flat termination adds beauty and interest. Ex. Charlie Key.
