Size: cabinet, 10.8 x 7 x 5.8 cm

Blue Topaz

A hefty topaz measuring 610 grms in weight, and standing impressively tall at over 4 inches. This comes from the famous 1960s find at the Xanda Mine, still known as the best single strike of blue topaz on the planet. The pieces have a characteristic riveting ice-blue color, and interesting etch and dissolution patterns on teh sides. What you really want is a good termination, retaining some of the classic chisel-point terminations of the crystal. From that point, the sides of these typically disappear into cityscape compleexities of etch patterns, and this one is no different: the trick is to find a piece that has

This gem, composed of two intergrown crystals sharing a termination, is a transparent, sky blue color. Classic! The large faces on both sides exhibit superior luster, while the side faces are slightly frosted. When this deposit was discovered in the late 1970’s, it arguably produced the world’s most beautiful crystals of light blue to rich blue topaz crystals, on and off matrix. GEMMIER IN PERSON! 6 x 4.2 x 3.6 cm

Locality: Klein Spitzkopje (Kleine Spitzkoppe) granite stock, Swakopmund, Swakopmund District, Erongo Region, Namibia (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 4 x 2.5 x 2.4 cm.
A superb miniature Topaz/Smoky Quartz/Schorl combination specimen from the famous Klein Spitzkopf location. The 1.7 cm Topaz is absolutely gem-clear and has a beautiful, sharp crystal habit. It is complemented very nicely by the 3.5 cm-tall Smoky Quartz (included by Schorl needles for accent) that it rests upon. Ex. Charlie Key.

This specimen floored me when I first saw it, as I thought it was Pakistani until I noted the differences in form and association. This crystal is PRISTINE and measures 4 x 4 x 3.75 cm in size. It is phenomenally equant and displays magnificently as it is centered, nestled in albite , between two splaying smoky quartz points. This is among the best of the new topaz finds from China. Compare with those shown in recent Lapis article from nov/dec Munich show writeup. These are better, best yet. Note the different sharp chisel termination and the style of the smokies, unique compared to Pakistani material. You just could not design a better topaz combination piece and I think the value is worth it no matter where its from. Compared to what a similar piece from Pakistan might cost these days, it is not any more expensive for the extra value of the interesting locale. 7.5 x 7.5 x 4.5 cm

A somewhat more elegant but less massive specimen featuring, this time, an ilmenite perched ON the smokies instead of vice versa. This specimen ALSO HOSTS, in the middle zone of sparkling brown you see there, ferberite and a small 8 mm topaz as well as probably other species that are micros. It is extremely aesthetic, overall, for what it is...and the crystal is complete around the upper termination and sides around to the back face

The gem topazes on this large specimen are the centerpiece, but they are beautifully accented by prismatic crystals of quartz, snow-white cleavelandite and a nice book of muscovite that sits right beside the best topaz crystal. Actually there are two very fine and bright ones, the larger measuring about 2.3 cm. Both are glass-transparent through the center, pure gem.

Unlike most of the sherry-colored topaz specimens from Mogok, which are single crystals, this one is associated with matrix and is, surprisingly, doubly-terminated. The top termination is crystallographically complex and the crystal is totally transparent, MUCH MORE gemmy in person because of the way the camera has trouble focussing through the gemminess and ehnaces slight veils as a result. The specimen is nearly pristine, save for a few minute dings at the base. It is equant, and symmetric around its girth. A large and fine topaz, indeed! It is just SO MUCH better in person. From the William Larson Burma collection, brought out prior to the current total embargo on Burmese minerals and gemstones.

This is a rather large, glassy and gemmy, sherry-colored topaz from Tepetate. The whitish mass at the termination is a cluster of spheroidal hyalite opal, which fluoresces. Many such crystals were found prior to the 1980s, but now they are seldom available, even in small size. This one is huge for the locale, among the largest that I know of, and would be considered a major Mexican topaz crystal. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.

Pakistan has long produced some of the finest Topaz specimens in recent memory, and to find them with any kind of associations is remarkable. Two crossed, gemmy and lustrous, sherry-colored topaz crystals are aesthetically perched atop mounded volcanic tuff matrix on this excellent specimen from Tepetate, Mexico. The large crystal is 3.3 cm and the smaller crystal has a very gemmy, complex termination. The small, isolated crystal is a nice accent. The base has been sawed to enhance display. Choice material from the Charles Hansen Collection, a well-known California collector.

A gorgeous sherry-colored Topaz that weighs 34 g. The clarity and luster are exceptional, and the crystal is practically pristine. The small amount of internal fractures near the termination is not accompanied by any surface damage at all, which is amazing. The are even multiple phantoms within the crystal, which is rare and adds even more to the already superb aesthetics. A beautiful gem crystal of highest quality. Ex. Charlie Key stock.

This really fat thumbnail crystal is an impressive thumbnail specimen because it has the depth/volume ratio to have the deepest color in this material, and it really does thus have more impact than others of its height. It is perfectly terminated with a complex stepped termination, frankly unusual. Weight is around 3.5 grams. This is, to me, one of the 2 or 3 most impressive fullsized thumbnails in the lot for overall showiness.

Fluorite imitating topaz

Here we have a nicely trimmed crystallized quartz matrix hosting a 3 x 2.5 x 2 cm crystal of fluorite that looks like green topaz. Is it a twin? I do not think so...I think it is some strange octahedral modification. But it looks like green topaz. In person, it is so gemmy and transparent that you can look right through it to your hand on the other side. It seems to be complete, although perhaps contacted smoothly, even around the backside.

The bit of edge wear at the large smoky termination is barely noticeable. The topazes and smokies have amazing transparency. This is honestly the first specimen of this specific type that Ive seen from this locality. Klein Spitzkopje is well known for its Topaz specimens, and like most granitic pegmatite localities, they are often associated with Microcline and Quartz. This piece features several gem quality, sparkling, colorless Topaz crystals up to 11 mm associated with Smoky Quartz and Microcline. The interesting aspect of this piece is that the Microcline shows a small area of bluish-green color making it, partial as it may be, an Amazonite crystal as well. Very unique. 5.2 x 5.0 x 4.7cm

A huge, cabinet-sized, complexly crystallized, very gemmy, cognac-colored topaz crystal beautifully accented with a 3.7 cm schorl and bladed cleavelandite from recent finds in the Shigar Valley of Pakistan. There is a 3.0 cm conchoidal fracture on one side, but this is very hard to see in the photo, and frankly not immediately obvious in person either from a distance, due to the super gemminess. Topaz, Quartz, Albite

Locality: Gaoligong Mts (Gaoligong Shan), Nujiang Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China (Locality at mindat.org)
An amazing specimen from a very small pocket recently found, that has the best color yet seen in Chinese topaz. The color in fact rivals Pakistani material, finally! This attractive matrix piece boasts crystals to 2.25 x 2 x 2 cm in size, with brilliant lustre and deep champagne color. As the crystals go larger in size, they shed some of the color intensity but get sharper and more gemmy, even (those to come in later updates). This is by far the best lot I have seen yet, although the mine has trickled material out for the last 5 years or so, sporadically. 12.9 x 8.7 x 4.6 cm

Locality: Dassu (Dasso; Dusso), Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 11.2 x 10.2 x 9.2 cm.
A totally gemmy, transparent topaz is the highlight of this excellent combination piece, which has a striking balance of topaz and quartz, both nestled in crystallized cleavelandite. The topaz is 5 cm wide, 4 cm deep and about 4 cm tall. It is pristine. In person, the topaz leaps out at you as a 3-dimensional jewel, transparent and brilliant like glass. You can see right through it to the quartz behind, the cleavelandite underneath, and the faceted terminations set against them. Most people consider this region to be the premier locality for champagne-colored topaz crystals of this style. I obtained this in 2008 directly from a source in Peshawar, when it was much larger and needed to be heavily trimmed and cleaned.

A superb thumbnail, with intense champagne color and top glassy luster. NOTE: These do fade in sunlight, due to the UV, but not in case lights. Ex. Leonard Himes Collection.

Glass-clear gemminess through and through characterizes this BIG topaz crystal from China! This whopper weighs in at 200 grams, and would cut some huge stones (but of course, we hope you dont cut it up!). It has a pleasing champagne-colored hue to it. The crystal is completely terminated, complete all around, with small spots of albite and some needle-like schorls around the sides. These were found about 6-7 years ago, and really good ones of this quality have not been found since. 8.4 x 3.4 x 2.9cm

A Fabulous, clean, miniature-sized Topaz crystal. This specimen is perfectly gemmy and has great luster on all the smooth faces. It has a very light champagne color, and great chisel-point termination. Very impressive in every way for this locality, this Topaz weighs in at 115 g. Ex. Charlie Key.

Locality: Jos Plateau, Plateau State, Nigeria (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 2.6 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm.
This is an old-time African topaz specimen accompanied by an old Hugh Ford label. It is really a super crystal, complete and undamaged all around, with the contact on the bottom naturally healed, probably from spending time in a stream bed. The crystal is of champagne color, and the faces have a wonderful silky luster. Weighs 15 grams.

The Zapot (topaz spelled backwardsпїЅ) is a small prospect in the middle of nowhere in Nevada. Harvey Gordon worked it on and off for many years, before finally hitting one glory hole of beautiful, intense blue topaz. This is, for my taste, the finest specimen on a gram for gram basis that I have seen from the find. I still recall the whole pocket on exhibit in Tucson, one year around 2000 or so. Most are a steely gray-blue color. This specimen is VIVID blue, with color an dlustre comparable to old Brazilian material, although with a unique crystal habit. It is complete on the front and sides, contacted in back, and extraordinarily gemmy for material from this find. I rank this highly, as a US classic, and there are simply very few Nevada topaz specimens that get me so excited, even though many were much larger an dpricier.
