Size: miniature, 3.8 x 3.0 x 2.6 cm

Aquamarine, Schorl, Cleavelandite

A robust, very bright 2.5 x 1.7 x 1.2 cm aquamarine is here hanging off a sharp schorl, for a really nice contrast of color and geometry. The aquamarine is phantomed, with a clear internal core and a flat hexagonal termination down hidden beneath the glassy and pristine surface termination. This blurs together in the photo but is more evident in person. Ex. Laura and Stevia Thompson Collection.

Aquamarine with Schorl

This fat, dramatic crystal is one of the largest, sharpest single crystals I have seen for the locality to date. It is sharply formed and very symmetric. The termination is lustrous, and really neat to look at because of the included schorls - not too many, and not too few. A small bit of matrix gives it contrast and presence.

Aquamarine with Schorl

Ivory colored feldspar is the matrix for a plate of intergrown, lustrous, black, schorl crystals, to 2.5 cm across, upon which are emplaced several, glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarine crystals, to 4 cm in length. A few aqua crystals on the right side are unterminated either by contact or damage; but the major cluster of 8 aquamarines at the left, as shown, are all terminated and pristine. Normally I would trim the plate in the middle, leaving a pristine small cab on the left, with those 8 gemmy crystals - and at a higher price for the perfection. However, the large cluster of schorl is such nice contrast, I just left the piece large still, as the blue-black contrast really does add visually, I feel.

Aquamarine with Schorl

This is one of the most balanced pieces, aesthetically, for blue-on-black, in my whole lot. Fine, lustrous black schorl crystals, to 3 cm across, form the matrix for this specimen. They make up a roseate cluster, complete 360 degrees. The largest schorl crystal is also doubly-terminated. Rising from the center of the schorls are a half dozen, glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquas with the largest reaching 4 cm in length (from its base within the cluster, 3.5 cm freestanding). Only the very slightest wear on some crystal edges has occurred, and otherwise this specimen is pristine. For this particular pocket, where many of the pieces had damage and my source had to be very careful in picking the better specimens, this is remarkable given the exposure of that crystal. Although not the biggest, or most rich in aquas, I value this highly for its stark, simple contrast of both geometry of form and color.

Aquamarine with Schorl

Ivory colored feldspar hosts lustrous, black, schorl in crystals to 2 cm in length. These then form the matrix for a carpet of thick, glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarine crystals that shoot out all over the place. At the cluster atop, they reach 4 cm in length. Except for some very minor peripheral wear, the aquas that stud this specimen are in excellent condition, especially given their 3-dimensional spray and vulnerability. The piece has no damage to the major crystals and only one broken crystal of any size, at the bottom of the main cluster and really not that distracting (but the price otherwise would , in turn, be higher). The lustre and color is really tops, for this pocket and the locale as a whole. A fine example of Erongo aquamarine in LARGE size for the price range.

Most of the 15 or so glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarine crystals rise vertically from a schorl and feldspar matrix. However, the largest of these aquas lies horizontally across the smack-dab middle specimen. It is doubly-terminated, and 5.9 cm in length, and beautiful. The schorls have good luster, are black and reach 2.0 cm in length. I really am impressed that almost all the aquas are terminated , with very little wear.

A dramatic, elongated aquamarine is aesthetically perched on an ivory colored feldspar crystal, angling into the middle. It is accented by clusters of schorl and aquamarine, which make for wonderful contrast and serve to enhance the freestanding 3-dimensionality above. The aquas are glassy and gemmy, and are intensely colored a vivid blue. Moreover, the largest aqua which measures 5.7 cm in length, is also doubly-terminated and pristine. It is in fact among the more perfect aquas in this lot. The schorl crystals are lustrous, black and reach 1.5 cm in length. The only possible downgrade here are a few very minor breaks to associated schorls and the downward-pointing aquamarine mixed in them. Overall, and on the business top end of the piece, this is a killer. Very showy specimen!

Crystallized, white feldspar is the matrix for this specimen which has a cluster of lustrous, black, schorl crystals to 2.5 cm across, upon which are emplaced glassy and gemmy, intensely-colored aquamarine crystals to 3.25 cm in length. The overall stark contrast of crystal form, color, and texture is very interesting. A druse of bubbly hyalite opal covers a portion of the schorl crystals. Like many pieces in the pocket, regrettably the terminations of the aquas do exhibit minor abrasions; but in context, I can live with it for the overall aesthetics featuring such well-defined and isolated crystals.

Perched on lustrous black schorl crystals, to 3.0 cm in length, are two glassy and gemmy, intensely-colored aquamarine crystals to 4.0 cm in length. The largest aqua and the largest schorl are both doubly terminated. Minor wear to the terminal edges of one aqua is relatively insignificant but a few broken small crystals in the middle need to be noted. Still, a very attractive piece, with stark contrast and unusually good color for the locale.

Aquamarine with Schorl

This combo specimen features at least 15 intensely colored, glassy and gemmy aquamarine crystals, to 3.0 cm in length. All major ones except one crystal are terminated, though a few minor crystals are not. Several lustrous, black, schorl crystals, to 2.0 cm in length , are closely associated with the aquas. The aqua crystals are more deeply colored blue but less gemmy for most of their length. The last 1 cm including the terminal faces are more glassy and gemmy, quite remarkable for the locale. Only the slightest wear to some crystal edges can be seen, however the overall effect of this specimen can not be diminished by it. It is a very 3-dimensional, radial cluster, with lots of appeal especially in this price range, I think

Intensely colored, glassy and gemmy aquamarine crystals, to 5.25 cm in length, are associated with lustrous black schorl crystals, the largest of which is 3.5 cm in length and is also doubly-terminated. The aquas are more deeply colored blue and less gemmy for most of their length. The final approx. 1 cm of their length culminating at the termination is transparent and a lighter blue color but very much more gemmy than the body. A few aquas exhibit slight wear at the terminal edges, admittedly, hence a lower price is attached.

Aquamarine with Schorl

This is the largest really fine specimen in what was said to be about 90% of the pocket contents, which came to Denver show of 2009. This pocket will be remembered for the robust, intense blue color, quite unlike anything from Pakistan or Brazil; and a combination with schorl matrix. These crystals are stunning in their richness and abundance on this well-trimmedpiece of matrix. The largest doubly-terminated crystal is 9 x 2.7 x 2 cm in size, with several smaller ones present as well. All major crystals are terminated and pristine, save only a few nicks here or there of no consequence. The two peripheral aquamarines to left and right, smaller, have a little more edge wear on their terminations but you have to go looking to see it. The overall look of this piece just screams COLOR; and it also has a 3-dimensional jackstraw look to it, in person, that is hard to convey in photos. Overall, this has some of the most robust, deep blue color I have seen before in an Erongo specimen, with a translucent and deeply colored body and a gemmy termination atop. The intense color, and large size, combined with lustre and a contrasting schorl association, all conspire to make this a special pocket considered by those who saw them recently at the Denver show to be among the best aqua finds here in about a decade of quite sporadic aquamarine mining. This particular specimen is big, about the size of half a volleyball, and dominates a display case.

Aquamarine with Schorl

This piece screams with color and has amazing 3-dimensional arrangement of the aquamarines upon the contrasting schorls. The large aqua is DOUBLY-terminated and 9.5 x 2.9 x 2.7 cm in size. It graces the back or the front of this specimen depending on how you want to show it. From one side, you have a shocking cluster of fat, very gemmy, aquas hanging off the schorl backdrop, featuring this largest doubly-terminated crystal in the middle. A few small aquas are broken off to the periphery, but none of the majors and it is inconsequential in context. A very minor bit of edge wear, a few dings that are trivial in context, are present on the big aqua terminations, but this does not detract visually as they are shallow; and i only mention it for accuracy here. From the other display angle of view, you have what looks like a totally different, more elegant specimen, featuring several fat aquamarine tips poking up over hills of schorl (and with the forest of accenting aquas below, like trees on a slope). The piece looks incredible from either angle of display - and as I said, it looks really like two entirely different pieces depending on your choice of angle. Overall, this has some of the most robust, deep blue color I have seen before in an Erongo specimen, with a translucent and deeply colored body and a gemmy termination atop. Aquamarines and schorl combine here to make a very dramatic, contrasting, 3-dimensional specimen featuring 3 core aquamarines on which a nest of smaller aquas hang off. The larger two aquamarines in front are 5.5 and 6 cm long. The 5.5 cm crystal is dramatically doubly-termianted wih both tips gemmy. The other crystal is partly doubly-terminated, with some of the bottom tip showing and the rest buried in white albite. The large crystal behind them, standing dramatically over the piece, is about 4 cm tall and 2.3 cm wide, notable for its gemminess, and glassy lustre. It is, i turn, crossed by a 4-cm-long doubly-terminated crystal hanging off its backside! All major crystals are pristine, though some very minor associated crystals to the sides show damage. All crystals have the robust blue which is characteristic of this pocket and much more lustrous, and less gray-blue, than most previous finds. VERY DRAMATIC SPECIMEN!

Aquamarine with Schorl

A straight-up 5.6 x 1.6 x 1.2-cm aquamarine, with robust blue color, hits you in the eyes as the dominant part of this specimen. It rises from a base of contrasting white albite nesting around the bottom termination, and contrasts then with the schorl and smaller aquamarines on the knoll of matrix which sits behind. The top of the termination is gemmy, and the whole crystal quite glassy by the standards of this locality. Some of the smaller flanking aquamarines (under 1 cm) are broken off at their tips, but this main crystal is pristine and also freestanding. In person, it is obviously more 3-dimensional than it can appear in a photo - the crystal looks pushed out and forward, remarkably preserved attached to the matrix. One of the more dramatic examples for overall geometry.

Aquamarine with Schorl

This specimen is a starburst of intergrown schorl and aquamarine, shooting out from all angles. It is a very 3-dimensional specimen overall, with crystals on 3 sides and contacted in back where it was removed from matrix. Most of the aquas are 2 cm or so in length (though one is 3 cm). A fat, very gemmy aquamarine is nested in the center of it all. All aquas on the display face are fully terminated and exceptionally glassy. Only one schorl on the display face seems broken, and it is hard to spot anyhow.

This specimen features two very blue crystals, 5.5 and 3.5 cm, perched on schorl matrix. The crossbar appearance of the doubly-terminated larger crystal (1.5 cm width), set against the black schorl, is striking and unusual. Note there is a hairline fracture near the termination, but no repair. This is a very 3-dimensional specimen. The aquamarines have the glassy lustre this pocket will be known for and are super gemmy at their tips.

A 5.5-cm-long aquamarine crystal sticks straight up fro ma nest of contrasting schorl here. The associated shorter but fatter aqua at the base of the piece Is about 3.4 cm tall (and much fatter). Both have very, very minor edge wear on the terminations but in context not bad at all. The overall look of the piece is very dramatic, very sword-in-the-stone like, as it stands upright at its best display angle. All schorl is pristine, and the contrast is really what will make this pocket famous down the road. The quartz association is unusual

A whopping 10 x 3 x 2.2 cm crystal, doubly-terminated, sits astride a cluster of fat schorl crystals (on albite core matrix). This crystal is HUGE for the locality, and has the robust deep blue color of this new pocket.. It is actually complete all around, and has both terminations, though with a small bit of edge wear on one end (very minor) and a bit of contacting where it grw against something, on the smaller and tapered end. It has the most robust deep blue color I have seen before in an Erongo specimen, with a translucent and deeply colored body and a gemmy termination atop. The intense color, and large size, combined with lustre and a contrasting schorl association, all conspire to make this a special pocket considered by those who saw them recently at the Denver show to be among the best aqua finds here in about a decade of quite sporadic aquamarine mining. This would be a dramatic specimen from ANYwhere, of course. The schorl association, and the size of the crystal, make it a major example from this find.

A dramatic 7 x 2.2 x 2 cm aquamarine here looks like it is about to leap off a well-trimmed matrix of schorl and albite. This is a briliantly lustrous, sparkling blue specimen that is large and unrepaired. The major crystal is 4 inches tall, and 2 inches across the termination! ALL crystals here are GLASSY, with the best lustre I have seen, almost glassy and polished in appearance. Even the terminations share the incredible lustre and clarity. Within the larger crystal is a large moving water bubble, easily seen; and a few smaller ones as well. The whole piece is a pocket floater! It broke away from the pocket wall and the backside was microcrystallized, so it is complete even on the bottom in a technical sense. More importantly, it look sgood all around, 360 degrees. I have not seen any aquas quite like this one, with the combination of lustre, color, and interesting inclusions (that serve to disperse light and enhance the color and sparkle inside). I will also add that large aqua plates like this, with no repairs, are VERY uncommon. The

This is a superb, dramatic specimen that while not the biggest, somehow seems to have more oomph than most pieces. It has deeper color, and a more clean aesthetic style, than others from the find that I have seen. The crystal is freestanding, complete all around. The color as you see here is spot on, very intense. Also , it is nearly pristine with just the most minor of edge wear - but more so than nearly any other large crystal in the lot. Most of the more exposed crystals from this pocket, and locale, have significantly more chatter to them. The lustre is excellent especially for this locality, from which most aquas are relatively more dull. The symmetry, sharp form, and straight vertical display here make this, for my taste, one of the best in its size class out of 500 pieces or so from the pocket which I have seen. A premium price compared to others of its size, admittedly, but depending on your personal style and what you wish to see in these aquas, it may be

A dramatic contrasting blue on black specimen: a single glassy and gemmy, rich blue aqua measuring 3.5 cm in length is nicely perched on splendent, black schorl crystals to 3.0 cm. One of the smaller aquas is doubly terminated. Other aquas are broken off right at the matrix and provide color accent. This si a very dramatic piece of unusual appeal for the way the single larger isolated aqua leaps out.

Three aqua crystals highlighted by the central robust crystal reaching 4 cm in length, are perched upon a natural pedestal of lustrous black schorl crystals to 2 cm or so. The aquas exhibit glassy luster and gemmy terminations with a rich blue color. Very minor edge chipping is admittedly present but does not detract from the overall visual quality of the specimen , though it is priced down a bit to make up for it (most pieces of any size in this pocket have such small dings anyhow).

The lovely aquas that make up this piece are unusually intergrown, even at their terminations. The combined effect of geometry and color, and big lustrous end terminations, is really striking! They exhibit glassy luster and gemmy terminations with a deep, rich blue color. The crystals reach 3.8 cm in length. As is common, very minor chipping at the terminal edges is present but is very minimal, and really does not detract from what is a most dramatic specimen. As an added bonus, the lower bodies of the aquas are accented with splendent, black schorl crystals. Displayed vertically, in particular, the totally gem smaller crystal just shoots off the top and presents with more pizzazz than most such specimens.

Seldom do you see aquas from anywhere but Shigar in Pakistan with such lustre to them, and color at the same time. This is an intensely blue crystal that looks richly included by albite in the photo, but ACTUALLY you are looking right through a ft 2-inches of almsot totally transparent, gem-grade, mostly clean crystal to see the little albite rosettes on the BACK of the specimen, here. Thats how clean it is. The camera is trying to focus THROUGH the crystal to the albite association coating on the back side (they are little discrete clusters of bladed albite crystals, stark white in person). The crystal cluster is complete all around 360 degrees, without damage, which I find remarkable. Also, its a floater...meaning it broke off in the pocket at some point from the

Locality: Dassu (Dasso; Dusso), Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan (Locality at mindat.org)
An absolutely stunning gem combo specimen that I am selling for a local friend, who cherry-picked from Herb Obodda after his return from Pakistan four years ago, on his way to a show. Cal Graeber trimmed into a far BETTER specimen. Herb, in fact, considered it one of the best combo pieces he had owned of this particular mix. On a rising bed of albite are two GEM topaz crystals (one behind the other) and an equally gemmy aquamarine, jutting dramatically in front of an Alpine-quality gemmy smoky quartz. You can look right into the C-axis of the aquamarine, and it is so glass-clear you can see all the way to the matrix. Same with the topaz in front. Due to the great trim job to provide balance to the specimen, it is just exquisite! 8 x 7.8 x 5.5 cm

What makes this combination specimen of schorl and aquamarine special is that it ALSO contains two spear-like crystals of smoky quartz, to 4.5 cm in length. Quartz seems rare in this pocket at least. Additonally, this plate of feldspar matrix is smothered by lustrous, black, schorl crystals to 2.75 cm across; and a bevy of glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarine crystals to 4.0 cm in length. A few aquas exhibit very minor wear on their terminations but it is trivial in context, and the piece overall has a very stark and fine separation to the crystals which highlights their sharp form. Lastly, the right side of the specimen is coated liberally by hyalite opal in small white crystals. .

AQUAMARINE on SMOKY QUARTZ

One of the choicest thumbnails in the collection, featuring a transparent, read-through, blue aqua perched on smoky! What perfect, complementing balance! The aqua rises through the smoky, which has grown around the base of the aqua. No damage, and complete and pristine all around save for a very shallow natural contact on the smoky that is hard to see anyhow, at its base. The aqua has PERFECT and highly bevelled termination

Aquamarine on Smoky Quartz

I must say upfront that aquas from Mexico are rare to non пїЅexistent, making this matrix specimen unusually good. I DID NOT BELIEVE IT WHEN I FIRST SAW IT - BUT IT WAS EVAN'S, AND HE IS really an expert and longtime collector of Mexican goodies. I also verified with others - it is rare, legit, and probably among the very best of its kind. The large aqua measures about an inch atop the quartz, but is technically 4.5 cm in length (extending through the quartz as it does), nestled in a matrix of smoky quartz crystals to 1.5 cm in length. The aqua, is lustrous, translucent, sky blue, with a core of colorless goshenite beryl. The termination, while rough, is comprised of tiny incipient faces and thus terminated quite fully. It is actually doubly-terminated Note the phantom core! . Minor damage or contact does exist, but compared to the significance of the specimen, is unimportant. I was able to get this from Evan directly in a trade. labels from Evan and the SchleppпїЅs accompany this old timer.

Locality: Murzinka (Mursinsk; Murzinsk; Murzinska) Mine, Sarapulka (Murzinka) District, Ekaterinburgskaya (Sverdlovskaya) Oblast', Middle Urals, Urals Region, Russia (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 9.7 x 7.4 x 3.9 cm.
This is a stunning old-timer from Russia, a large aquamarine crystal spiking through a crystal of smoky quartz (the quartz wrapped itself around the aqua). Though the aquamarine does have one repair with some restoration at the join, on the backside of the repair, it is otherwise complete and shows very little damage all around. One of its terminations has been retained as well. This is a big crystal, measuring 6.5 cm, and much of it is really gemmy, with fine saturated blue color. In addition to its being from Russia, the contrast with the smoky quartz makes it really special, compared to your usual Paki specimen. The accompanying collection card shows it to have moved form the Shortmann collection to Bentley’s Minerals in 1974, which then sold it to collector John Durkos. From him it went to the George Elling collection of gem crystals. This is old material, perhaps even from the 1800s though one cannot prove it. Certainly, it is classic for old Russian beryl, rarely seen on matrix!

A lovely and very unusual Aqua from the famous Erongo Region. These doubly terminated crystals, which range up to 5.1 cm, have excellent luster on all faces and terminations and are attached to gemmy smoky quartz. What is so attractive and rare is the pastel sky-blue color. I have not seen the likes of this before, especially from Erongo. The larger crystal even has a 2 mm gemmy cap to it. A wonderful specimen in its own right, and a killer rarity for this world-renowned locality. Ex. Charlie Key stock.

Gemmy Aqua 1.5 cm long, deep gemmy brown, bifurcating smoky quartz crystal into two excellent terminations. The luster on the Aqua is excellent and very good on the smoky. The termination of the Aqua is excellent, and looking down you can see all the way to the contacted base. A terrific thumbnail.

An exquisite specimen, one of my absolute favorites, featuring a sharp, VERTICALLY upright aqua perched on matrix of crystallized msoky quartz. From Erongo, the smoky quartz association is uncommon but you find it from time to time. Pakistan occasionally has aquas in association with smoky quartz, but generally not with aqua of this calibre. The aqua itself is pristine and measures 2.5 cm tall (1 inch!) x 2 x 1.5 cm. When we got it from Charlie, it was coated by a thick layer of iron oxide

A very unusual citylike cluster of elongated, tapering aquas, from a new locale. This was picked up by Dr. Emanuele Marini on site, in his travels there. The piece is complete all around except a small bit in back, and sits nicely on its own. A small quartz crystal sits atop

Aquamarine on Quartz with Schorl

This monstrous matrix aqua features a 5-inch (12.5 cm!) crystal perched nicely amongs and rising from clear quartz and albite matrix, with schorl for accent. It has a complete, lustrous, sharp termination and superb glassiness and transparency throughout the body of the crystal. The combination of size and stark contrast makes this one of the most dramatic aquas for the price I have seen for sale. It does have one repair, but lower down just above the join with the quartz, and not so easily visible. In context, as well, its minimal. The crystal has really attractive, interesting inclusions of small feathery sprays of what I think might be hematite , inside. Never seen...

Aquamarine on Quartz

This amazing combination specimen has absolutely NO REPAIRS (i assure you on this)! This is almost impossible, you'd think, given the apparent exposure of the crystal to the elements. It came out in a very large piece, which was then trimmed down to size, preserving the central core and the protected crystal. The crystal measures 11 x 2.5 x 2.25 cm in size, or about 4.5 x 1 x 1 inch! It is very interesting in its own right, aside from the sheer insanity of the combo aesthetics. This crystal is the product of complex solution events that have given it a very interesting pattern, like a cityscape, around all the hexagonal faces of the side. The top termination, however, is unaltered in form , though it seems to have a secondary oriented coating of micro-aqua that gives matte finishes to some alternating faces. It is hard to describe, but I think the pics do it best anyhow in this case. 15.2 x 11.4 x 10.2 cm

Aquamarine on Feldspar

The crystal here is VERY GLASSY and has a high color saturation, for an aqua from Shengus. It measures 9 x 3.5 x 3 cm in size and rises majestically from the matrix. The crystal is complete ALL AROUND, 360-degrees, except for a few absolutely tiny dings on one edge of the top termination that have been smoothed over with a miute bit of color-matched epoxy filling (not that it can be seen). This dramatic piece looks like it should cost far more, in my opinion, but I got it as a fixer upper straight from the mine. After cleaning and repair (it has one very tight contact-join repair near the base) it presents as a dramatic speicmen because the 9-cm-tall aqua is perched on CRYSTALLIZED matrix, for startling contrast not just in color but in crystal form as well. This piece is from the same pocket as the specimen below, with interesting feldspar that is often etched. This piece is one of the few from the pocket I have seen with feldspar crystals in full euhedral form, and the effect of contrast is, as i said, very dramatic. The specimen overall is MORE 3-D than it appears, as well. So, overall, I consider this a bargain. It LOOKS like it should be worth double, to my eye.Comes with custom engraved lucite base, for easy display.

From the new find of August 2009. This matrix specimen is exquisite because of its geometry: four essentially vertical, slender gem aquamarines are perched on a horizontal aquamarine crystal, measuring 3.5 cm across. The crystals are glassy and gemmy and exhibit a rich blue color. The aquamarine terminations are totally transparent and all are nearly pristine.

Size: 7.3 x 7.2 x 5.4 cm.
From the new find of August 2009. Perched aesthetically on crystallized, white feldspar is a dramatic, upright 4.0 cm aquamarine. It is of the highest quality: glassy luster, gemmy terminations and a rich blue color. However, the termination has a large chip, shallow (a few mm at most) but visible, on half of the basal plane of the termination. Nestled in a vug are three slender, gemmy aquamarines that are doubly terminated, as an accent elsewhere on the piece.

A dramatic, elongated aquamarine is aesthetically perched on an ivory-colored feldspar crystal, angling into the middle. It is accented by clusters of schorl and aquamarine, which make for wonderful contrast and serve to enhance the freestanding 3-dimensionality above. The aquamarines are glassy and gemmy, and are intensely-colored a vivid blue. Moreover, the largest aquamarine which measures 5.7 cm in length is also doubly terminated and pristine. The schorl crystals are lustrous, black and reach 1.5 cm in length. From the new find of late summer 2009.

Aquamarine with Schorl

Perched on a matrix of white feldspar is a cluster of glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarine crystals, to 4.6 cm in length along with a cluster of lustrous, black, schorl crystals to 3.5 cm in length. Both the largest aqua and largest schorl are doubly terminated. Some contact or damage to the terminal faces of the other aquas on this specimen does exist. Nevertheless, its an attractive piece with excellent color and appeal
