In Mitteleuropa ist das Alpenschneehuhn ein Eiszeitrelikt, das in einem eng umgrenzten Gebiet der Alpinstufe (ab 1800m) ein verbreiteter bis häufiger Brut- und Jahresvogel ist. Dieses Männchen gesehen auf dem Diedamskopf.
