Este centro de investigación de enfermedades tropicales fue creado con la idea de integrarlo, como Facultad de medicina, a la Universidad estatal que se pensaba abrir en Panamá. Como esta Universidad Bolivariana no se materializó, el edificio fue cedido a las autoridades zoneítas de salud, quienes le dieron el nombre de Gorgas Memorial Laboratory en recuerdo del coronel Gorgas.
