The PAPI acts as temporary runway lighting and uses two red lights to indicate to a pilot that their aircraft is too low. The PAPI uses two white lights to indicate to a pilot that their aircraft is too high. To achieve a safe landing, a pilot must ensure their aircraft is at the right height and angle to allow a red and a white light to be visible.
