Description

Copyright: Nyani Quarmyne/Save the Children

One year-old Koursia Mahamadou is a beneficiary of the Save the Children feeding program in Yekoua in the Zinder region of Niger. Her parents say she was severely malnourished, but has gained a great deal of weight since commencing weekly visits to the feeding centre at the age of eight months. After a poor harvest, her family are living day-to-day, subsisting on a low nutritional-value millet-based diet. Koursia's father used to migrate to Nigeria to work and return with money to feed the family, but he is presently at home, fearful of returning to Nigeria because of the unrest caused by Boko Haram. Koursia is drinking a simple porridge of millet flour and milk, which is a typical lunch for she and her mother.
