Laut einer österreichischen Privatsammlung, in deren Besitz sich die Schiffchenmütze befindet, gehörte sie ursprünglich dem amerikanischen Schriftsteller Ernest Hemingway. Dieser war Fahrer des American Field Service, einer Art Sanitätstransportgruppe im Umfeld der Isonzoschlachten im 1. Weltkrieg. Seine dortigen Kriegserlebnisse schilderte er im Roman In einem andern Land. In der Zwischenkriegszeit war er öfter zum Fischen am Isonzo, wo er eine Ferienunterkunft hatte. Aus diesem Umfeld stammt die Mütze laut Überlieferung. Die bereits von Motten angefressene feldgraue Kappe wurde sorgfältig restauriert.
