Mais Girardon a transformé l'allégorie conventionnelle en une évocation dramatique et même tragique, d'un homme en proie aux forces de la mort. Son attitude recroquevillée sur le brasero traduit l'instinct de survie de ce vieillard qui se sait condamné.

Elle se trouve désormais à l'abri dans la Galerie Basse du château depuis 2009
