Angekauft als Selbstbildnis Friedrichs; die schlüssige Zuschreibung an Caroline Bardua stammt von Andreas Aubert. - Die Malerin wohnte während ihres Studiums in Dresden von 1808-1811 im Hause Gerhard von Kügelgens, als dessen Schülerin. Sie lernte dort zahlreiche Dresdener Künstler, auch Caspar David Friedrich gut kennen. 1810 beteiligte sie sich erstmals an der Dresdener Kunstausstellung, sie zeigte drei Bildnisse und ein Gemälde mit zwei Frauen am Piano. "Man fand bei allen die Ähnlichkeit auf den ersten Blick. Am meisten zog das vorzüglich gelungene Porträt des Malers Friedrich die Zuschauer an" (Journal des Luxus und der Moden, 1810, S. 313). - 1811 besuchten Friedrich und der Bildhauer Kühne während einer Harzwanderung die Künstlerin einige Tage in ihrem Elternhaus in Ballenstedt (vgl. Werner, S. 33 f.). Die freundschaftliche Verbindung hielt ein Leben lang. Ein zweites Bildnis entstand 1839: "Ihren alten Freund Caspar Friedrich hat Caroline ganz gebrochen und krank gefunden. Sie geht jetzt jeden Morgen zu ihm, um ihn zu malen." (Werner, S. 152, Abb. vor S. 145; Börsch-Supan/Jähnig, Abb. 40; das Bild heute in den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dessau). Eine Pastellzeichnung nach dem Ölbild J. C. Baehrs von 1836 im Stadtmuseum Dresden entstand später für die Familie Friedrich (heute im Schinkelpavillon beim Schloß Charlottenburg, Berlin). - Der Landschaftshintergrund dieses Bildnisses erinnert an Rügenzeichnungen Friedrichs und unterstützte die spätere irrtümliche Zuschreibung an diesen. Den altdeutschen Rock zeigt ebenfalls ein gezeichnetes Selbstbildnis Friedrichs aus dem Besitz von Carl Gustav Carus (Stadtmuseum Dresden; Börsch-Supan/Jähnig, Nr. 142). Die Armbinde steht vielleicht mit dem Tod des Vaters am 6. 11. 1809 in Zusammenhang, könnte aber auch als provisorisches Zeichen des antinapoleonischen Kampfes gedient haben. Eine ungefähre Kopie des Gemäldes durch A. Freyberg, 1840^[1] (Pommersches Landesmuseum, Greifswald).
