Description
English: Gus Strateges, an 11-year-old celery vendor at the Center Market (demolished; current site of National Archives building) in Washington, D.C., is photographed while working at 10:30 p.m on a Saturday night. His family immigrated to the United States in 1910 and were living at 212 Jackson Hall Alley (demolished; was located between Pennsylvania Avenue, John Marshall Place, Third, and C Streets, NW). Although Gus didn't leave Center Market until 11 p.m., he had to be up early the next morning to sell newspapers and gum.
