Es braucht nun eine andere Institution, die die Not dieser Menschen lindert. Das Rote Kreuz wurde zum wichtigsten Hilfsverein und erhielt 1917 den einzigen Friedensnobelpreis der Kriegsjahre. Ohne das Rote Kreuz wäre eine halbwegs menschenwürdige Verwundeten-, Kranken- und Flüchtlingsversorgung nicht möglich gewesen.
