La Mélancolie acquise par le musée d’Unterlinden en 1983 s’inspire sans conteste d’une gravure sur le même thème que Dürer réalise en 1514. Sujet de réflexion depuis l’Antiquité, la mélancolie participe de la théorie médicale des quatre humeurs dont l’équilibre relatif conditionne la santé de l’homme. À l’opposé du Moyen Âge, la Renaissance valorise cet état et l’associe au tempérament artistique pour en faire le ferment de toute création. Cranach emprunte des motifs à Dürer mais les transpose pour illustrer un des prêches de Luther visant à dénoncer la mélancolie comme un état propre à un être influencé par Satan et contre lequel il faut boire et manger.

Plus que tout autre peintre contemporain, Lucas Cranach l’Ancien (Cranach, 1472 - Weimar, 1553) a été fortement marqué au début du XVIe siècle par les pensées de Luther qui travaille pour le prince électeur de Saxe acquis à la Réforme. Dans la peinture de Cranach, plusieurs motifs restent encore à expliquer, notamment la figure de la femme ailée pelant une baguette qui est sans doute une allusion au désœuvrement propice à la mélancolie.

Écho des recherches menées par les artistes de la Renaissance italienne qui pénètrent largement en Allemagne au début du XVIe siècle, le fond de la scène s’ouvre, tel une fenêtre, sur un paysage naturel dans lequel la perspective est construite par le dégradé des couleurs du ciel.
