Thus in 1850, he beatified Peter Claverof the Society of Jesus, the Apostle ofCarthagena in South America, and espe-cially of the negro slaves; and also theBlessed Mariana de Paredes, known alsoas the Lily of Quito; in 1852 he beatifiedJohn de Britto, a martyr in India, JohnGrande, and the illustrious Paul of theCross, the founder of the zealous andaustere Order of Passionists; in 1853 hebeatified the Holy French Shepherdess,Germaine Cousin, and the Jesuit FatherAndrew Bobola, martyred by the Cos-sacks, and in 1861 John Leonardi.
