Seems as, to me, of all bereft.Sole friend thy woods and streams are left;And thus I love them better still,Even in extremity of ill. That extremity came in the au-tumn of 1861, when the Prince Con-sort, having returned in October fromBalmoral, had visited the Prince ofWales, then a student at the Univer-sity of Cambridge, and was passinghis time in his usual employments atWindsor; though not in his usual ro-bust health, yet freely exposing him-self to the inclemencies of the season.One day, about the beginning of De-cember, he reviewed a volunteer corpsof Eton boys in a heavy rain, and leftthe ground suffering from a feverishcold. The symptoms gradually grewworse, and, on the thirteenth, assumeda dangerous character. The Princewas prostrated by a typhoid fever, andraj)idly sank under it, dying the nextday. That event has colored thewhole of the Queens later life. Ithas thrown her much into retirement;and when she appears in public, sheseems ever to be accompanied by thisgreat sorrow.
