Text Appearing Before Image:
e hall containing several long tables, upon whichcould be found all the various instruments, scientificand chemical apparatus that the arts at that timecould produce. Books lay promiscuously about, while here and there long lines of bichromate-of-potash cells could be seen, together with experimentalmodels of ideas that Edison or his assistants wereengaged upon. The side walls of this hall were linedwith shelves filled with bottles, phials, and otherreceptacles containing every imaginable chemical andother material that could be obtained, while at theend of this hall, and near the organ which stood inthe rear, was a large glass case containing the worldsmost precious metals in sheet and wire form, togetherwith very rare and costly chemicals. When eveningcame on, and the last rays of the setting sun pene-trated through the side windows, this hall looked likea veritable Faust laboratory. On the ground floor we had our testing-table,which stood on two large pillars of brick built deep 270
Text Appearing After Image:
MEMORIES OF MENLO PARK into the earth in order to get rid of all vibrations onaccount of the sensitive instruments that were uponit. There was the Thomson reflecting mirror gal-vanometer and electrometer, while nearby were thestandard cells by which the galvanometers wereadjusted and standardized. This testing-table wasconnected by means of w^ires with all parts of thelaboratory and machine-shop, so that measurementscould be conveniently made from a distance, as inthose days we had no portable and direct-reading in-struments, such as now exist. Opposite this table weinstalled, later on, our photometrical chamber, whichwas constructed on the Bunsen principle. A littleway from this table, and separated by a partition,we had the chemical laboratory with its furnaces andstink-chambers. Later on another chemical labora-tory was installed near the photometer-room, and thisDr. A. Haid had charge of. Next to the laboratory in importance was the ma-chine-shop, a large and well-lighted building
