El lienzo representa a la reina María de Molina (c.1264-1321), viuda de Sancho IV de Castilla, presentando a su hijo Fernando IV de Castilla (1285-1312) en las Cortes de Valladolid de 1295, en las que la reina María de Molina consiguió que todos los procuradores presentes en las Cortes rindiesen homenaje al rey Fernando IV, que reconociesen por tutor del rey al infante Enrique de Castilla el Senador, hijo de Fernando III de Castilla, y que la custodia y crianza de Fernando IV le fueran encomendadas a la propia reina María de Molina. A la izquierda del cuadro aparecen representados la reina María de Molina y su hijo, Fernando IV. Ambos personajes están cobijados por un dosel y subidos a un estrado, y detrás de ellos aparecen dos obispos, portando uno de ellos un báculo pastoral. La reina María de Molina está cubierta con un manto rojo, y lleva en la cabeza un velo blanco y una corona. Fernando IV, por su parte, que tenía 10 años de edad en el momento de los hechos, aparece vistiendo una corta túnica blanca, que le cubre hasta las rodillas, y que está adornada con el escudo del reino de Castilla y León. El rey porta un cetro dorado en su mano izquierda, que le llega casi hasta la cabeza, y una pequeña corona. La reina María de Molina tiene los brazos parcialmente extendidos hacia adelante, en un gesto que parece indicar que está velando por el destino de su hijo.
