We have also beento the Colosseum and several of the churches. . . . On Thursday, Corpus ChristiDay, there was a processionin which the Pope took part. The square in front of St.Peters looked glorious, but, except for the Pope, who wascarried beneath a canopy, the procession, though very gor-geous, did not please me particularly. I dislike the priestsand monks, who are so evidently indifferent to the wholeceremony, in fact the entire Roman Catholic ritual is anti-pathetic to me. The days in Rome were so fully occupied that Gabrielecould only find time for her letters to Bulow in the earlymorning hours before the others were up. Thepicture, which was a great success, is at Tegel; her gracefulfigure is represented life size, clad in a simple dark red gown,and seated in an open hall. Her right hand rests lightly ona marble basin, from which white doves are drinking, the littlehead with the pretty brown hair is slightly bent, while the eyeshave a dreamy, distant expression. As though she weresearching for something which she will only find withinherself was Thorwaldsens description of the expression socharacteristic of Gabriele, and so faithfully rendered by theartist.
