English: A Twin Otter airplane at Westhaven Nunatak. Many mountains in Antarctica are almost completely buried under thousands of feet of snow, with only their peaks exposed. These peaks are called nunataks. Kenn Borek Air Ltd., Calgary, Canada, is contracted by the National Science Foundation to provide some airplanes and flight crew for intracontinental flights in Antarctica. Due to the extremely cold temperatures, nearly -70F on this day, only planes with mechanical systems (as opposed to hydraulics) can operate.
