Description |
It is appropriate that the '100th Anniversary of Dutch military Aviation' airshow included an RAF Dakota, as during the latter years of WW2 Dakotas of the RAF and USAAF were extremely common in Dutch airspace, and were also very popular with the Dutch civil population. Volkel is not that far from Arnhem, the scene of operation 'Market Garden' which saw hundreds of Dakota missions take place. This aircraft was originally allocated US military serial '42-24338', and she served postwar with the RCAF as '661'. When she moved to the UK for the Royal Aircraft Establishment, she was mistakenly allocated what was believed to be her original serial of 'KG661'. When further research proved this to be wrong, she was given the then new serial of 'ZA947' which she still carries today. She is now operated by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) based at Conningsby in Lincolnshire. I believe that she may be the worlds last military operated Dakota (with piston engines). I could, however, be wrong!! She is seen taxiing in after her display, following a transit flight directly from the UK. c/n 10200. Volkel Airbase, Netherlands. 14-6-2013 |
