Description

There's an interesting story with these too. They were bought to replace Jetstreams in the trainer role and as a result sometimes fly overseas. When they were delivered they were all registered on the British civil register. They are leased by the RAF rather than owned outright. Everything went smoothly until one sunny day when captain and crew tried to depart from an airfield in Germany. They were checking out of the operations room when the captain was asked for his pilot's licence. "I haven't got one, I'm in the RAF, look, you can see my wings on my uniform, I'm a pilot." "I'm sorry mein herr, zis ist ein zivil flugzeug!" (You'll have to do your own German accent.) The upshot was that they had to arrange for a civilian to fly the machine back to RAF Cranwell where it is based. The result of that was that some though not all of the King Airs are now MILITARY registered.
