Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. ??� Inside a protected clean room tent on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a worker (right) examines part of the second half of the fairing to be installed around NASA??�s Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft. The fairing is a molded structure that fits flush with the outside surface of the rocket and forms an aerodynamically smooth nose cone, protecting the spacecraft during launch and ascent. The IBEX satellite will make the first map of the boundary between the Solar System and interstellar space. IBEX is targeted for launch from the Kwajalein Atoll, a part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, on Oct. 19. IBEX will be launched aboard a Pegasus rocket dropped from under the wing of an L-1011 aircraft flying over the Pacific Ocean. Mortar to intumescent interface on unexposed side of test assembly leading to UL certification listing CAJ 8073. The idea is to show how the FS195 wrap strip intumesced to close off the thermally degraded rubber pipe insulation. The picture was taken AFTER the hose stream test.
Post fire test pictures showing how 3/4 in. thick acrylonitrile butadiene/polyvinyl chloride (AB/PVC) flexible foam pipe covering can go through the seal unhindered. It was wrapped inside the mortar with an intumescent wrap strip, which stopped the fire. There was no autoignition of the insulation due to flame retardants inherent in its organic composition.

These were connected between the floors, causing cable penetrations between fire compartments. When the penetrants were installed, the government invited their local firestop manufacturers to install their products. Kindling was placed below the trays. These kindling blocks were set on fire. The fire quickly engulfed all trays. Results were mixed. An enormous amount of smoke was generated before the fire was extinguished. Trays twisted and buckled.

Technicians install solar panels aboard the mariner H spacecraft in a cleanroom facility at Cape Kennedy. The spacecraft will orbit Mars following a seven-month journey from Earth. Designed to function 90 days, the spacecraft, which will be designated Mariner 8 following launch, will provide data about the Red Planet's atmospheric and surface characteristics. Mariner Mars H will be launched aboard an Atlas-Centaur space vehicle no earlier than May 7, 1971, from Cape Kennedy's Launch Complex 36A.
