The Elephant Trees, above Frosterley. This walled clump of trees looks fairly ordinary close to. However, from a distance they have a distinctive shape, - which could be an elephant or a dinosaur. They can be seen for miles around, and are a well-known landmark.
Tesco water tower. Before the supermarket was built on this site the water tower was painted battleship grey with the word Bowaters on it. The Bowater paper mill closed some years ago now but this local landmark remains next to what is still known by older residents as the Bowater roundabout.

St Luke's Church. St Luke's Church which stands at the top of Bold Street on the junction of Berry Street and Leece Street is a building of great historical importance. Building work commenced in 1802 and the church was consecrated on January 12th 1831. Alas, only its outer wall and tower remain standing as on Monday 5th May 1941 St Luke's was hit by an incendiary bomb dropped by the Luftwaffe during the week-long Liverpool Blitz. One of Liverpool's most loved landmarks, known locally as

Spinnaker Tower.
Ralphs Cupboard. Ralph's Cupboard is a collapsed sea cave which has a Cornish legend about it. It is said to have been the home of the giant 'Wrath of Portreath' who would throw huge rocks at passing ships and steal their treasure and eat the crew. It's also supposed to have been a smugglers' hide-away and lots of their treasure would have been stored there.

King Charles Tower, City Walls, Chester. Standing on the North-East corner of the city walls over looking the canal, is the tower called

In the Goyt Valley. The quarry was started here by a chap named Pickford who eventually created the transport and removal firm known worldwide.
Hampstead Norreys Motte. Hampstead Norreys Motte. This small mound is in woodlands SW of Hampstead Norreys Berkshire. Take the footpath through the church grounds and then turn left into the wood. The mound is a couple of hundred yards on the right.
Grafton Flyford church and rectory. When you see this pretty little village on the hill to your right from the Stratford road you know you are nearly home in Worcester
Gold Hill, Shaftesbury. This must be one of the best known landmarks in the country. Out of sight just to the left of the bottom left hand corner stands the famous

George Marsh Memorial. George Marsh was the only person martyred in Cheshire under Queen Mary. He was burned at the stake on the 24th April 1555 in Boughton north of Christleton road opposite the Gallows. George Marsh was condemned to burn to death as a heretic by bishop of Chester George Coats at the consistory court in the Cathedral. Which was then housed in the Lady Chapel behind the high altar.
In 1898 Nessie Brown erected and obelisk on the opposite side of the road. Nessie Brown was a member of the influential Brown family of Chester. And lived in the area. The obelisk was moved to the current location after the road was widened. The inscription reads:
George Marsh born Dean Co. Lancaster. To the memory of George Marsh martyr who was burned to death near this spot for the truth sake April 24th 1551. Also John Plessington 19th July 1679. Canonised saint 25th October 1970. See http://www.chestertourist.com/boughton.htm

Abbey Gateway, Northgate Street, Chester. The Abbey Gate stands opposite the town hall, and is the entrance to Abbey Square. The Abbey Gate was built in the 13th century, and was rebuilt in 1591. The room above the gateway was used as a court for the pleas of the abbey and a registry. It was used to hold George Marsh in during his trial in the Lady Chapel of the cathedral. The Abbey Gate was constructed of sandstone. It has a large outer semi-circular arch. Inside is the pointed main entrance arch. There is a small gate of pedestrian access. And on either side of the main entrance arch two niches.

Youghal lighthouse. The building of Youghal lighthouse, at the entrance to Youghal harbour, was completed in 1849 but a light was not exhibited until 1852. It became unmanned in 1939 and was converted to electricity in 1964. When the lighthouse was built Youghal was a busy commercial harbour. It is still open for shipping but on a much reduced scale.
