Mariel fue acusada de haber asesinado a Salvador Rodriguez, investigador de la UNAM. Sin embargo, pocos días después la PGJDF desistió de la acción penal en su contra pues se comprobó que no había tenido nada que ver con el asalto y asesinato. La liberación de Mariel, en gran medida, se debió a la presión que se hizo a través de las Redes Sociales en una estrategia coordinada por las amigas de la estudiante.
