This photograph is of a lightning strike in Tampa, Florida. Although it appears that the lightning bolt hit the building, it actually didn't. The sudden flash of light made the camera incorrectly capture the bolt to the extent that it looks like it hit the building on the side nearest the camera. I'm not sure if the lightning bolt actually struck the ground or if it instead struck a low cloud, since the bottom was blocked by the nearby building. I believe it probably did strike the ground, because I think the clouds that can be seen near the bottom of the bolt were much further away than they appear. This image was captured mostly by accident. Because the lightning bolts occur so fast, I could only blindly point and shoot in a direction without knowing if a lightning bolt would appear. After I took several hundred pictures with my digital camera using this method over a period of about two hours, this was the only image that came out.

Another day, another lightning storm. This was the second storm of the day; the first broke one of our trees in two and killed a motorist in Annandale. Once again, pseudo-HDR combined with a simulated GND filter effect, on each of two exposures (each one captured different individual strokes of the same lightning discharge), combined in PSE.

Panorama photography taken during a lightning storm over Bucharest, Romania
Small quarry. This looks like it was quarried for stone, but is now unstable and breaking up.
Recent Landslip. Still active erosion occurring in the upper reaches of the valley. More bushes growing higher up the slopes where they are protected from grazing by the rock faces.
Periglacial Landslip. The scars of a massive periglacial landslide on the side of Moel Cynghorion. This occurred during the very wet period which followed on the Ice Age.
Near Camas Mor. On the western side of Lyndale Point a small burn has caused enough erosion to trigger a landslip on the side of the small hill.
Mam Tor. Mam Tor is 'The Shivering Mountain' and landslides have been active on its southern side for thousands of years. The main A625 road used to run across the landslide deposits but following activity on the slide in the 1970s, the road was closed in 1979.
Looking up at Goat Island. This photograph, on the Lyme Regis Undercliff looks up to the cliffs of Goat Island. Goat Island is not really an island but the result of a
Looking South near Holbeck Gardens. On Scarborough South Cliff, above the Spa complex. Here we are looking South. The area in the mid distance protected with rock armour is where the Holbeck Hall hotel slipped into the Sea in the early 90s.
Landslump Above Saltburn Scar. The landslump shows the precarious nature of the cliffs facing constant erosion from the sea. Sooner or later this slump will give. In the distance is Huntcliff once the site of a Roman signal station which has been mostly lost to the North Sea.
Landslips near Fairlight.
Landslip. Rosedale Wyke. Just a reminder that how active the east coast is from pounding of the North Sea. Will this grid square be
Landslip on the A894. Loch Assynt in the distance.
Landslip near The Coombs. The field beyond the house here is affected by a substantial area of unstable hillside. The little road was closed due to movement for months a few years ago and no doubt will be again.
Landslip material behind the beach, Osgodby. My 1
Landslip fissures. On Stob an Uillt-fearna. A common sight on schist hills. A slope has failed and a landslip started. Sometimes not all the face falls and a series of fissures are formed.
Landslip fissure, Beinn Bhreac. Close up of the 10m deep crack caused by the faliure of the eastern slopes of Beinn Bhreac.
Landslip feature, Meall MГІr. The steep southern slope of Meall MГІr is mostly a failed slope, over steepened by ice erosion, the hillside has slumped leaving a lot of piled debris, chasms, crags and compression ridges like this, where material has risen up when the slide stopped. Loch Katrine below.
Landslip debris, Beinn na Gainimh The glaciers, or their meltwaters overdeepened Glen Loch and Beinn na Gainimh could no longer support itself. Large areas of hillside slumped away leaving a chaotic mass of hollows and pinnacles.
Landslip at Higher Dunscombe Cliff. The South West Coastal Path is currently diverted northwards because of this landslip.
Landslip at Corriegour. Heavy rains have brought down part of the man-made slope above the A82 beside Loch Lochy.
Landslip Debris, Hasty Bank. The landslip occurred in 1872 completely destroying the Stokesley to Bilsdale road below. This resulted in a four year legal battle to decide if the local township of Ingleby Greenhow had to re-instate the original road or if they could just use a two mile diversion. They lost.
Landslip. That will be red sandstone then - makes the sheep go pink!
Landslip - Great Edstone. Shallow landslide on the North side of Edstone Hill. It would seem prudent to try to stabilise this area, perhaps with tree planting, as it isn't very far to the village at the top of the hill.
Landslide. Considering how busy the A470 is at times, not a single vehicle was damaged. The road was closed for a few days until the hillside above was considered safe from more movement.
Landslide, Glen Ogle. Glen Ogle is notorious for things falling into it. Boulder falls were a constant problem for the Caledonian Railway running up the glen, and the boulders beat the dreaded Dr Beeching by six weeks to finally close the railway. The railway can be seen as a line of trees.
Landslide, Black Clough. Judging by the state of the vegetation on the mound of debris at the bottom, this small landslip has happened very recently (within the last couple of days). A classic landslip combination of unstable (shaly) soil, heavy rain, a steep slope and undercutting by the stream.
Landslide site on the Speyside Way. Heavy rains washed out the path. The prohibitive cost of full repair may mean this spur loses its footpath status.
Landslide debris. Piles of blocks litter the south face of Meall MГІr, where the hillside has slumped during the late ice age. A common feature on schist hills.
Landslide debris. Piled blocks below a failed slope on Meall MГІr.
Hooken landslip. The landslip seen from Hooken Beach, with the greensand pinnacle on the right and the chalk beyond it. Remarkably, the pinnacles remained upright as they slid.
Flood debris, Glen Ogle. 17 months on, the debris from the great landslips that followed flash flooding in August 2004. This led to a dramatic rescue of everyone on the road at the time. I got out with less than an hour to spare, meeting the storm in Callander.
Flash flood damage, Glen Ogle. 18th August 2004 I was in Glen Ogle, ready to nip up Meall Buidhe in what at first looked like improving weather. However dark clouds to the south changed my mind and I headed home. Within an hour, a violent thunderstorm had deposited enough rain to wash out large areas of hillsides. Two burns turned to a boulder slurry and blocked in a number of cars on the road below.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3577864.stm
Away from the road, other places were damaged too, this is a washout on the shepherd's track up on to Meall a'Mhadaidh.
Fissures, Beinn Bhreac. Taken from the summit of Beinn Bhreac a striking landslip fissure from the post glacial failure of the east face of Beinn Bhreac. Lubricated by meltwater and oversteepened by the Lomond glacier carting away material, the slope could no longer support itself. Large areas of the hill fell away, but some stayed, but fractured now. Gullies, sinkholes and piles of debris can be found along many kilometres of this hill. A landslip like this was responsible for creating the outline of The Cobbler 11251. Tarbet Bay on Loch Lomond below.
Erosion. Bad erosion by the North Fearns road, looking northeast.
Dunt Lane.
Debris below Fiaclach. A jumble of blocks from the rockfall that created Fiaclach. Loch Glass below.
Church Wood Landslip. Evidence of a recent landslip at Church Wood Pontrobert
Bual a'Claidheimh. Hole left by a landslip. A block of rock has slipped down the east side of Shee of Ardtalnaig, then stopped, leaving a large hole. Failed slopes such as this date from the end of the ice age.
