Reed beds and woodland. The Tay to the south is just visible across a wide reed bed.
Pendle Hill from River Douglas. Preston North End Football Ground and St Wallburgers Church
Palmerston's Follies. This view looking downstream along the River Thames shows the locations of the three nineteenth-century forts defending the approach to London. On the Essex side there was 37911 and on the Kent side 48171 and 147305. There were a number of other forts like this around the country, none of which ever fired a shot in anger until WW2 and then only anti-aircraft fire. They were known disparagingly as PalmerstonВ’s Follies. However, had an enemy ever tried an assault up the Thames the picture shows how the crossfire would have made life very uncomfortable to say the least. NB the G.R is for the river between the forts.
On the Humber River Bank Taken at MR: TA21722078 looking in a NW direction. The BP cooling towers at Saltend can be seen in the distance.
Old Course of the River Ba. The OS 1:25000 map shows the river flowing north west at this point but it is now taking a more direct linne to the loch. Leaving an elongated muddy pool at the MHWS mark.
North Humber bank. This is the view looking westwards along the River Humber bank taken from MR: TA19132338. The high tide mark is littered with debris - tree branches, petrol cans and all sorts of other rubbish!
North Humber Bank. This is the view looking NW up the river bank. It's a public footpath but hardly gets used at this point as it's very remote. This picture was taken at MR: TA19802286.
Newtown Creek, Isle of Wight. A view south down the moorings in Newtown River. The high ground in the distant left is Brighstone Down.
Mouth, river Erradale.
Mouth of the rivers Calder and Ehen. Fast flowing fresh water from the rivers running down the beach tide out has allowed this most odd effect photo. Thorp in the background.
Mouth of the River Sid, Sidmouth. The river seems to disappear into the shingle.
Mouth of the River Parrett. Taken from Steart, looking NE, showing the southern end of Steart Island with Burnham-on-Sea and Brent Knoll in the distance
Mouth of the River Naver. The Naver reaches the Atlantic Ocean at Torrisdale Bay. On this August afternoon there were press reports of crowded beaches at Brighton and Bournemouth. Here we counted 3 people and one horse.
Mouth of the River Don, Aberdeen.
Mouth of the River Don, Aberdeen. Effects of longshore drift shown.
Mouth of the North Esk River at St Cyrus.
Moored boats on the Exbury River. The Exbury River is little more than a tidal channel where a stream empties into the Solent. There is a small private quay with a number of moored motor boats.
Midstream. The position of the 8-sided Victoria Tower to our south-west places us on the Mersey Ferry in the lower half of the square.

Looking towards Brough. Picture taken from the end of Booth Nooking Lane looking approx. northeast across Pudding Pie Sand towards Brough on the North bank. The white buildings are the British Aerospace factory.
Looking toward Levington Creek from the Long Reach. Taken at sunrise, the Thames Barge shown is Pudge.
Looe: mouth of Looe River. Looking south with a fishing craft entering Looe harbour
Longney Sands on the river Severn. As the tide recedes fast stretches of mud and sand are revealed attracting large flocks of seagulls. The Forest of Dean can be seen on the skyline with May Hill to the far right.
Longney Crib and the River Severn. Looking east from the flood bank over the flood plain to the River Severn with the cotswold escarpment in the distance.

Iorsa Water. In this autumnal view, the river is viewed from the bridge which crosses its mouth
Incoming tide meets outgoing river.... This was taken from Redkirk Point (NY302651). I was amazed to see the incoming tide creating a bore. And the speed it came in at....well, I was impressed.
Incoming Tide. A view of the incoming tide from the Fairbourne estuary shoreline, with the Mawddach River Valley in the distance beyond the Barmouth Pedestrian and Railway bridge.
Humber Sunset. The photograph was taken in 2001 looking north west over the River Humber from the car park just south of the village of Paull. The picture was shown on BBC 'Look North' (Hull edition) on 26th. April 2005, so can be truly captioned
Humber Sea Wall. Looking along the sea wall towards Immingham. The chimney which is marked on the current map can be clearly seen.
Humber River Bank near Paull. Taken at the end of the new river defence section. The ubiquitous BP cooling towers at Saltend can be seen in the right of the picture in the distance. Looking in a NW direction from MR: TA18902363.

Ineos Chlor (former ICI) Castner-Kellner chloralkali works at Runcorn with Runcorn Hill beyond. The lighthouse is some 250m behind the photographer.
Hale - the River Mersey at Small Ends. Hale. View across River Mersey from the Mersey Way at Small Ends. Ineos Chlor (former ICI) Castner-Kellner and Rock Savage chemical works at Runcorn. Unusual to see a boat on the Mersey (contrast the scene one can imagine from a hundred years ago). Manchester Ship Canal (that takes such traffic as remains) is concealed but runs between the river and the factories.
Greenock, Inverclyde. View of Greenock Container terminal and Esplanade on the south bank of the River Clyde taken from the cruise ship Constellation
Greatham Creek. To the South of the North Gare Sands is a beach which is uncovered at low tide. Although the beach is overlooked by chemical plant and the nearby nuclear power station, you can sometimes watch the seals which bask on the opposite bank.

Discovery Point Dundee.
Dark Water river and marsh, Lepe Country Park. The river Dark Water drains Beaulieu Heath and reaches the sea via a tunnel and sluice gate. In former times it turned east and entered the sea at Stansore Point. The river is flanked on either side by fine reed beds and marsh vegetation. Afon Dyfi (River Dovey) This is a view taken standing at SN 67184 97048 looking east. According to the map I should have been standing in the river itself but as you can see the route of the river is some distance away to the south.
Afon Dyfi (River Dovey) This is a view taken standing at SN 66872 96971 and looking directly south over Afon Dyfi (River Dovey). The tide was out at the time giving good access to most of the estuary.

Eep. We're okay here, but that's awfully close. At last report, this nearby fire is expected to be contained within the next day. Panning to the right would show this fire's smoke merging with the huge amount of smoke from the San Diego fires. It's a heavy, heavy sight. Sigh.

Was asked to take a friend to the airport early this AM and was up before dawn. Couldn't resist the opportunity to go across the street to Harbor Island and see what sort of photos I could get of the fire clouds. Most of these are facing east. I've not really heard the latest as to what's going on with the fires, except that they are still raging all over the county.

This is me, believe it or not. I got a ride in this beautiful Pitts S-2B airshow biplane out of a local airfield during a private airshow. This picture was taken by a relative during the takeoff. The pilot turned on the smoke system 10 feet up and rolled the plane to a knife edge (meaning the plane is banked at a 90 and still flying level), then he pulled it up vertical right over the spectators. After that manuver, he let me take the controlls of the plane and I did some basic aerobatic stunts, including wing overs, cuban eights, split-s's, loops, rolls, and snap rolls.

Marines from the 1st Tank Battalion, 29 Palms, California, conducted an in-stride breech live fire demonstration in front of numerous nations as part of coalition training for 2001's BRIGHT STAR 01-02 Exercise. An In-Stride Breach is a special type of operation used to overcome and breakthrough unexpected or lightly defended obstacles. BRIGHT STAR is a multinational exercise involving more than 74,000 troops from 44 countries that is designed to enhance regional stability and military-to-military cooperation among the U.S., its key allies, and its regional partners. It prepares U.S. Central Command(CENTCOM) to rapidly deploy and employ the armed forces to deter aggressors and, if necessary, fight and win side-by-side with its allies and regional partners.
