Iridescent Clouds
Iridescent clouds
Iridescent clouds in Round Rock & Austin, Texas on July 31, 2008.
Copy from the 1630s by Jacob Elbfas of an original painting from 1535 by Urban mГҐlare, depicting a halo display event.
The visible haloes are:

22 В° halo, at upper right (should be centered on the Sun)
parhelic circle, large white circle (centered on the zenith: appears 'horizontal' in the sky)
parhelia including 2 sundogs, 2 120В° parhelia and the anthelion (dots on the parhelic circle, resp. nearest to farthest from the Sun)
upper tangent arc and possible Parry arc (2 crossing arcs just left of the 22В° halo (actually 'above' the 22В°, in the sky); not realistically shown)
circumzenithal arc, smaller crescent inside the parhelic circle (also centered on the zenith: appears 'horizontal', high in the sky)
infralateral arc (bottom right)

Note that the whole sky appears strongly tilted in the image: the upper right corner is actually down in the sky (when looking towards the Sun), the zenith is at the center of the circumzenithal arc and parhelic circle.
This may result from the artist's choice to represent the display in a realistic orientation relative to the landscape: in this case the sun would have shone from 3/4 back to the right of an observer facing the city.
The relative brightnesses of the haloes are quite accurate.

In this image, the swirling clouds known as vortex streets appear along the left edge of the image, stretching southward from Isla Guadalupe. Southeast of the vortex street, a glory, which resembles a rainbow, hovers above the cloud cover. The glory is faint but large, 200 to 300 kilometres long, along a north-south orientation. In this glory, reds and oranges are most visible.

Glory in the ballon-shadow
Being a frequent flier and interested in optics means that I often see glories. They are due to sunlight almost turned 180 degrees around by cloud droplets, producing colorful rings and a circle of light around the airplane shadow. This is not due to normal reflection or refraction as in rainbows and halos, but is thought to result from surface wave effects that allow light striking the edge of droplets to bend around the droplet. The optics gets rather involved, as seen in www.philiplaven.com/p2c1a.html
