Dunas e lagoas dos Lençois Maranhenses. Dunes and lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil. Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, at first glance Lençóis Maranhenses looks like an archetypal desert. Actualy it isn't a desert. Lying just outside the amazon basin, the region is subject to a regular rain season during the beginning of the year. The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: freshwater collects in the valleys between sand dunes, spotting the desert with blue and green lagoons that reach their fullest between July and September. Les larges dunes de sable blanc, décrivant des courbes majestueuses, donnent à première vue l'impression d'un désert, ce qui n'est cependant pas le cas. En effet, située juste au-delà du bassin de l'Amazone, la région est sujette à des pluies régulières pendant une bonne partie de l'année. Les pluies entraînent l'accumulation d'eau fraîche entre les dunes de sable parsemant le site de lagons bleus et verts qui atteignent leur maximum entre juillet et septembre.
