Description

These once flourishing coconut palms live on the slopes of Mount Tarvurvur in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. Depending on the prevalent wind conditions, the poisonous gases and ash from this active volcano weaken and eventually kill the local flora and fauna.

However, this volcano is a two-edged sword for whilst it is responsible for some destruction it is also the reason why, away from the gas and ash, plants and vegetables absolutely thrive in the rich fertile soil. Some of the most delicious fruit and vegetables (and some of the largest) I've ever eaten is grown in this area.
