Summaryedit
Description |
This is a soon-to-molt (note underlying next head capsule appearing as a swollen "neck") Melanitis caterpillar, one of the so-called Evening Browns (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae). Of the four Javanese species, this can only be M. leda or M. phedima – most likely the latter, based upon my rearing experience of both larvae from elsewhere in SE Asia [comment by Keith Wolfe]. Melanitis phedima ? or Melanitis leda ?? Genus: Melanitis FABRICIUS, 1807 Tribus: Melanitini (Evening Browns) Subfamily: Satyrinae (satyrids or Browns, Augenfalter) [det. Keith Wolfe, 2011, based on this photo] Family: Nymphalidae (brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies, Edelfalter) Superfamily: Papilionoidea (unranked): Rhopalocera Suborder: Glossata Order: Lepidoptera (butterflies & moth, Schmettlerlinge & Nachtfalter) Class: Insecta (insects, Insekten) more info: tolweb.org/Melanitis/70746 and: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanitis_phedima Indonesia, W-Java, Depok: vic. Cinangka, ca. 50m asl.
