Entre elas estão o gato-tigre, Felis tigrina, do tamanho de um gato doméstico e o menor dos gatos; o maracajá , Felis wiedii, e o Felis geoffroyi, pouco maior que os outros dois, mas apresentando manchas menores e em maior número. A jaguatirica é um gato do mato de maior porte. Os gatos do mato têm hábitos noturnos e geralmente vivem nas matas. Caçam no chão, onde são muito ágeis, ou nas árvores, e se alimentam de pequenos mamíferos, aves, répteis e anfíbios. Durante a noite chegam a invadir galinheiros onde causam grandes estragos. São inofensivos ao homem, mas defendem-se ferozmente quando atacados. Geralmente a fêmea dá a luz em algum oco de árvore ou em uma moita de arbustos bastante densa, onde possa esconder os filhotes. Devido a sua pele muito bonita, os gato do mato são bastante perseguidos, estando ameaçados de extinção. Das três espécies, apenas o gato maracajá chega a atingir o sul dos Estados Unidos; as outras duas são comuns nas florestas das Américas Central e do Sul.
