Methane from Muck. This plant in Sandy Lane Aveley Essex collects methane from covered over landfill sites. The gas produced was piped to the Thames Board Mill in Purfleet. The mill is in the process of closing so new markets will need to be found for the gas. The plant has the advantage of preventing gas from leaking into nearby homes.
Malvern Gas Works Site. Now a Transco owned pile of rubble - close to the railway.
Lower gatehouse and gas-works, Castle Carr. Looking N along the bridleway. Originally the lower gatehouse of the Castle Carr estate, the left half of this building was also a gas-works. Now both halves are private residences. Ahead, a crowd is waiting to enter the estate on its annual open day.

Gasholder, Wrythe Lane, Carshalton (B278).
Gasholder, Southall Gasworks. Taken from Townsend Road (TQ 121 803). The LH plus arrow on the gasholder refers to London Heathrow, it is intended to point planes there and prevent them accidentally landing at Northolt Airport instead -- the runway there is shorter and they may be unable to take off again. You would hope that pilots don't actually need reminding all that often!

Brunswick Business Park and Gasometer on Grafton Street. Brunswick Business Park has developed over the past 20 years, especially popular with car showrooms. Building of new swish apartments with wonderful river views and quick access to the city centre via the new station has really made this old dock area a popular place to live.
Braishfield AGI. Phew, what a stink of gas. AGI seems to mean Above Ground Installation, which is odd, as it's in an old quarry.
Bell Green Gasholders. These are the gasholders at the old Bell Green Gasworks. My Dad worked for British Gas, woe betides anyone who referred to structures like these as gasometers. They don't meter anything he would retort!
Battersea Gasworks. The Dogs and Cats Home is to the right of shot, behind the gasholder.
Basford Gas Works. Viewed from the Ring Road bridge this 19-acre former gasworks site at Basford was the principal gas production facility for the City of Nottingham from 1854 to 1972 when the site stopped producing gas. After 1972 the site was used as a depot and training facility for British Gas. More recently the site has undergone an extensive soil washing process by the National Grid to remove contamination.
