A view inside the enclosure of a CNC Swiss-style screw machine, built circa 1990s or 2000s. A gang of single-point tools slides on either side of the main spindle. The back spindle can take a part from the main spindle and hold it for additional cutting operations on the backside. Finished parts then slide down the ramps into a tray. Depending on the part design, the cycle may be very short, and the finished parts come sliding out at a prodigious rate. The blue-and-orange objects are nozzles that direct a flood of coolant directly into the cutting area.
Charles Vander Woerd's Automatic Screw-making Machine, circa 1871-1876, invented for the American Watch Company, Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. This machine could make any size watch screw; one operator could attend six of these machines to give a combined output of 50-60,000 screws per day.

'A1' buffer beam mark on brand new steam locomotive 60163 Tornado on dipslay in the National Railway Museum after her first few main line tours. The 'A1' denotes a Peppercorn A1 class Pacific (4-6-2) locomotive
The front end of Virgin's Class 57/3 Thunderbird locomotives, photographed when it was at the head of a line with two of its classmates in a siding at Crewe railway station is 57313 Tracy Island. I presume the green stuff on the buffers is some sort of lubricating and/or rust prevention grease. The locomotives' use in rescuing failed trains gave rise to the Thunderbird name and associated naming scheme in reference to the classic 1960s Thunderbirds TV series. In addition to the traditional hook-and-chain, these locomotives are fitted with Dellner couplings that fold down to allow them to connect to Class 220/221 Voyager DMUs and Class 390 Pendolino EMUs in case of failure or, in the latter's case, diversion via non-electrified lines.
