English: First test of Brisbane's river fire fighting service, Gardens Reach, Brisbane River, October 1942 Nine hoses were brought into action from the decks of the Government steamer John Oxley and three trailer pumps and the ship's engine pump were used to force the water 60 ft into the air. The Civil Defence Minister Mr Hanlon, the Deputy Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Mr J. Healey and members of the Harbours and Marine Board watched the test.
