La scène se passe de nuit, comme le montre la lanterne allumée. La bijin semble s'apprêter à nouer les fils de l'horloge, pour en arrêter le mécanisme, sans doute pour rester plus longtemps avec son amant. Selon une autre explication, celui-ci est à l'extérieur et attend le carillon pour entrer, que la belle est en train de faire sonner plus tôt.
