Description Mango Tree sprout from seed - the large root going down seeks the groundwater and supports the tree. Alphoso Mango, Indialantic, Florida USA. Visible are the main root, the stalk or trunk, leaves, old seed shell, rich soil is still on the seed and roots. I was able to dig the entire plant out by hand from the sandy Florida soil with roots intact. Plant is about 2.5 weeks old. This demonstrates why potted plants take longer time to root than one sprouted in the ground. Actually, my experience in Central-East-Coastal-Barrier Island Florida is that transplanted mango trees from a pot have a much more difficult time (10%) surviving than one grown from seed directly in the ground. Nearly every seed (80%) planted at the base of the mother tree from a freshly eaten, ripe mango will sprout and start a tree once the fall hurricane rain soaks the ground. That ground is fertilized with mango leaves, chicken egg shells, occasional fruit tree fertilizer spikes, mango peels, and rotting mangoes half eaten by squirrels before the fruit falls from the tree.
