Description Forrest Mims preparing a model rocket for launch at an old horse racing track near Saigon in 1967. This was taken by an US Air Force photographer for an article that appeared in the October 19, 1967 Pacific Stars and Stripes newspaper. Another picture from that session was used in the article.

Photo details provided by Forrest Mims:

The rocket has a single inlet in the black nose cone and a single outlet port in the upper red section. A radio-control transmitter (in grass at lower right) sent a string of pre-programmed pulses to a receiver in the rocket. Each pulse briefly opened the outlet port. Photos of the rocket smoke trail showed course changes or yawing each time a control signal was sent.
The control signals were programmed into a tape on the tape recorder (left of my hands). Two portable CB radios were used to coordinate the launch with Vietnamese kids who would show up for launches.
This is the only time I wore a uniform for a flight test. Previously I got into some trouble when an Army Huey gunship showed up and pointed its .50 cal at me while hovering a hundred feet away. For these flights I wore civilian clothes.
