Jean Etienne Dominique Esquirol (1772 – 1840): Neben Pinel, dessen Schüler und Nachfolger er war, bedeutendster französischer Psychiater der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Lieferte mit seiner Dissertation «Des Passions, considérées comme causes, symptomes et moyens curatifs de l’aliénation mentale» von 1805 («Die Leidenschaften als Ursachen und Symptome der Geisteskrankheit sowie als Mittel zu ihrer Beeinflussung») die theoretische Grundlage für die bereits vorher in England praktizierte „moralische Behandlung“ (Peters 2000). Differenzierte Halluzinationen und Illusionen und sah in Sinnesstörungen ein Hauptsymptom von Geisteskrankheiten. Schaffte den Drehstuhl und andere groben Einschüchterungsmethoden ab, auch die Blutentziehungen bei tobsüchtigen Patienten.
