Summary

Description Scanned page showing the knife of Jan de Doot and the kidney stone he removed with said knife from his own kidney with the help of his brother in the 17th century. This story is described in the book Observationes Medicae by Nicolaes Tulp. Full Dutch story accompanying the picture:

Waarneemingen. IXde Boek, eenendertigste Hoofdstuk. Een zieke zig zelven van den Steen Snydende.

"Joannes Lethaus, een Smit, een moedig Man, en van eene ongehoorde stoutheid, wien de Steensnyder tweemaal den steen had afgnomen, had zoo veel tegenzin in zyne dagelyksche rampen, en herhaalde snyding: dat hy ten derden male van denzelfden beul gepynigt zynde, liever aan allerhande gevaren wilde onderworpen worden, dan het mes des steensnyders wederom te beproeven. Hebbende dan zyn moed opgebeurt met de hoop van de herstelling zyner gezontheid, en nu vastgestelt hebbende, met niemands tusschenkomst, zig zelven te snyden; zond hy zyne Huisvrouw geen erg daar in hebbende naar de Vismarkt; en het Sakje (Scrotum) pgeschort zynde van zyn broeder, die alleen by het werk tegenwoordig was, en de steen met zyn linkerhand vastgehouden hebbende, sneed hij moedig in de bilnaad (Perineum), met een mes heimelyk van hem bereid, en telkens staande bragt hy de derde slag toe, eer de wond kwam tot die langte, welke de grootte des steens vereischte. welks uithaling evenwel door de nauwe opening der wond hoe hy moejelyker vond, hoe hy meer poogde die, zyne twee vingers aan beide syden daar in gestoken hebbende, te verwyderen; en daar meede kragtiger dringende, waar in het grootste belang van dit werk was, den steen eindelyk met een zeer groot geraas, en merkelyke scheuring der blaas uit zyne schuilhoeken te dryven. Welke meer stoute dan voorzigtige onderneming naar zyn wensch gelukt zynde, en nu op den grond leggende de vyand die hem den oorlog had aangedaan, haalde hy een Heelmeester, op dat de kanten der wond toegenaait zynde, de opening die hy zig zelven gemaakt had behoorlyk verbonden werd; welker vleesch ook zoo gelukkig gegroeit is, dat 'er geen kleine hoop van gezontheid heeft toegeligt, maar de wond was te groot, dan dat de blaas zoo zeer gescheurt zonder gaping of gedurige verzweering (Ulcus) geheelt werd.

Maar deze steen groter dan een Hoender-Ey, en wegende vier oncen, verwekte des te meer verwondering, hoe ze gelukkiger voor den dag kwam, alleen door behulp der hand, zonder de vereischte werktuigen, en dan van den zieke zelve, die al zyn hulp alleen had in de stoutheid, gelyk de vertrouwendheid alleen in de ongeduldigheid: in welke waarlyk ontoegankelyk vertrouwen eener opgebeurde moed, gelyk hy niemand week, zoo was hy ook geensins minder dan die geenen, wier standvastigheid de gedenkschriften der ouden fraay opschikken. Zoo helpt somtyds de onbezonnenheid, dien de reden niet helpt."
