Carriage horses in Vienna have to pull carriages through heavy traffic. Horses as prairie animals are used to wide open spaces and would run away normally if they feel endangered. Cities with their tight streets, noisy vehicles and many people are a constant stress factor for easily frightened animals like horses. They are not suited to this environment. Every year there are traffic accidents involving spooked horses.
Countless horse carriages wait on St. Stephen's Square in Vienna. Even in the hottest hours on summer days most of the horses go without shade or water. If tourists decide to take a ride, the horses have to pull the carriage through heavy traffic. Every year there are incidents with horses collapsing and dying under these conditions.
