Nachdem in Köln Luthers Bücher öffentlich verbrannt worden waren, fühlte sich dieser zu einem weiteren Schritt des Widerstandes ermutigt. Am 10. Dezember 1520 verbrannte er vor dem Elstertor unter großem Zulauf von Studenten Werke des Kirchenrechtes und Schriften seiner Gegner. Als letztes Stück übergab er auch ein Exemplar der Bannandrohungsbulle den Flammen. Luther war also überzeugt, dass er mit gleichem, ja besserem Recht den Papst aus der Kirche ausschließen könne, als jener es mit ihm getan hatte. Die öffentliche Begründung dafür nahm Luther in der Schrift „ Warum des Papstes und seiner Jünger Bücher von Dr. M. Luther verbrannt sind” vor. Luther erblickte nämlich im Papst den in der Bibel geweissagten Antichrist, der am Ende aller Tage in der Kirche die Macht an sich reißen und die wahren Gläubigen verfolgen sollte.
