English: Allegorical copper engraving by F. Bleyswyk on the title page of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria, ed. by Pieter Burman(n) the Elder, Leiden 1720. — The engraving is a small allegory of rhetorics: On the left side, you see Athena with her owl, the goddess of wisdom. On the right side, you see Mercurius/Hermes, the god of trade and profit, but also of trickery and deceit. Together the two gods describe the range of the rhetorics between wise cousel and tricky persuasion. In the center, a scene of public persuasion.
